Quake 4

Quake 4 Graphics Issue (yes another one)
I just bought Quake 4 and I'm now indulging onto what seems to be a well known topic...The graphics look like crap even while set to ultra settings...And I know this is a 2005 game so this isnt Killzone quality it's frickin Quake...Anyway I see some people have solved this problems by configuring a few things in setting while other have downloaded other config files and Idk what to do to make this game look "sharp" because this quality of my game looks worse than the 360 version. It's unpolishes/ blurry......Simply im asking ya guys how to fix this problem?

(Thank you very much for reading and the responses, you guys rock!)

I really wish these fixes could be automatically applied through Steam, for users which have purchased the game. I was really wanting to buy this game for my father during the sale, but he wouldn't have a clue where to start with manually applying these fixes and wouldn't enjoy the game looking in crap shape either. He does play all newer games, so knows when graphics are bad and not like they should be. This problem is turning me away from gifting him this game, as I can't play technical support over the phone, just to get it working like it should from the get go.

Ah after searching that post Guydodge posted (Thank you Guydodge) I found myself a solution of many!

(now there are different ways people went about to fix but i find this the most simple)

I didnt download anything just changed a few numbers....

1.) set your graphics to ultra and all that ♥♥♥♥ in the settings like normal. Exit Game

*Just to see the result when you boot it up*

2.) Go to your file location for Quake 4 and find the Quake4Config.

*To find this go to STEAMAPPS>COMMON>QUAKE4>Q4BASE

3.)Once you are in the q4base scroll through all those files til you find a file call Quake4Config

4.) Open the file and replace the values that are displayed in the game file with these values (the number to the right)

seta image_downSizeLimit "1024"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "1"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeBump "1"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "1"
seta image_useCache "0"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "30"
seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "0"
seta image_useNormalCompressionLoadDDSForPal "1"
seta image_useNormalCompression "2"
seta image_useAllFormats "1"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_lodbias "0"
seta image_anisotropy "8"

5.) SAVE IT SAVE IT SAVE IT. so it changes and all that junk

6.) Play Game enjoy!!!!!!

---I dont know jack about altering files. I was just a guy scrolling for answers...but if i were to guessing the changes are broading the value to allow more specular, bump, etc in order to look better.

Hope this helps you guys, Thanks Guydodge for pointing me in the right direction!

Thanks so much for coming back with your findings Pizza Time, much appreciated. I suppose you have found a dramatic improvement between before and after screens with these changes? You have come across no ill behaviour from altering the file either? This is great news that it can be fixed, but still cumbersome and for those that really have no clue what they are doing, they will never fully get out of the game what they should be. I still wish there was a way this could be done automatically when the game is installed, if it knows hardware is newer than 10 years ago. Would really be a big help.

No it runs perfectly fine, for me at least. I know there are people that want the max ultra deluxe burrito settings, but im just trying to make the game looking good from what everyone remebers. I mean i dont know anything about altering files but i was able to change the values

I got a feeling my instructions will be cumbersome for some but I feel like I've been as basic as it can be lol.

And yeah I like to download a game and play it instead of working 20 minutes to get it running to my likeing then playing it.

Exaclty and I am worried about my eldery dad who is clueless and with -100% patience lol.

All you honestly need to do is go into advance settings and turn off the dynamic lighting (I think it's called that)
cantankerous Jun 24, 2014 @ 12:02pm
Does that one thing change everything else to the above values? If it is that easy, why is everyone changing everything else? It is too bad in this day and age, with hardware as strong as it is, that one can't even have dynamic lighting enabled.
MrMcSwifty Jun 24, 2014 @ 1:44pm
And why would you ever want to play without dynamic lighting???

Especially when there's a simple fix to get everything working perfectly.
