Unable to install Quake 4 on Win 10

I have a old copy of Quake 4 on CD but cant install it on windows 10.
Either i get 1628 error, or the game was somehow installed but it wont start.
after 2xclick on exe nothing happens. i tried every compatiblity mode (Win XP, SP 2 or 3), run as admin, copying files to harddrive and install from there, disable Kaspersky and deleting the %temp% folder.
do you have any other suggestions?

according to this[answers.microsoft.com] it should work, maybe you have a driver issue.

EDIT: have you patched it to the latest version ?

i got the old non steam version :D
and it runs on win 10 with last patch !

I had a similar issue, could not get it working, tried patches, I just waited for a steam sale, and got it very cheap.

If you can't fix it, roll back to 7. It has until 2020 to be used.

i somehow managed to fix it. you need to copy files to your harddrive and then rename the installer folder or something like that. after that you need to download the latest patch and then it worked for me

if it's anything like the steam version then the 'ultra' graphics settings don't get configured properly and the game textures end up looking like a game from 1995.

generally Quake4 patched version menu is responsive, most of the things you can configure there.

Generally the "skip" or "downsize" parameters to "0", compression ones the same.

Regarding the [n]Quake4[/b] CD, I have the "Collectors Edition" with Quake2 plus two expansion packs added and all installed fine, Win10. I tried some good retro games and some demand particular comatibility modes to even run the setup, nonetheless Win10 should help. Hard to tell what the issue could be with the OPs case.
