cd key bug
I bought the game on steam and it keeps saying i need a CD Key, i dont have a cd key and why do i even need one? how can i fix this

I haven't had that issue with this game, but I have with others (Doom 3, for example). Right-click Quake 4 in the Steam client, and you'll see an option that says "View CD key," and it'll tell you the CD key. Go ahead and hit "copy to clipboard." You should be all set :)

It doesn't have a view cd key, i tried to exit and relaunch the game several times and i can get it to run without a cd key 10% of the time, most of the time it requres a mysterious cd key, and some of the time it tells me the cd key is already in use

Hmmm, that's very odd. When you hold shift+tab (or whatever you use for the Steam Overlay shortcut), does it show a CD key there?
If the CD key doesn't appear there, try verifying your cache. Right-click the game in Steam, go to Properties, then local files, and verify integrity of game cache. That usually takes a few minutes, it'll tell you if you need to do anything else. When that's done, try opening the game again, that may do the trick.

The reason you need a CD key is because that was the way at the time of this games release they prevented piracy. The original Sims has it too because it was released near the release of Quake 3.

I have the same problem.I paid for it, now I can't play it which is ridiculous (since, you know...I paid for it).

weird maybe keys have run out n thats why theyr not being generated n steam aint doing nothing about it witch ks why you cant get prey any more
