OP, rather than using Joy to Key, you can try setting up a Gamepad Configuration within Steam itself now, it might even have one already available for you to try out. Alternatively, if you own an XBox 360, Quake 4 was available on that system (and included a port of Quake 2 as well on a second disc) and will obviously have full gamepad support.

Spent a few minutes on the first level and worked without issues using the default keyboard and mouse mapping for games with no real controller support, but you can also create a custom set up. I recommend a mouse when in the menu as the right analog stick is a bit twitchy there, but gameplay was fine.
Yes, it is an FPS, which is why controller support would be a no brainer. If steam config worked I wouldve bought this(on sale) months ago.
