Quake 4

Quake 4

linux version is asking for the cd-key
On Debian 9 I've run a command:
$game-data-packager --binary-executables quake4
Then install deb-packages and some libriaries. The game is starting, but asks for cd-key. Where can I get one (legal, of course)? Or maybe there is another way to run Quake4 on Linux?

Install the windows version into a virtual machine, wine, dual boot, other computer etc. Run the game once to get the key fetched from the key server, then make a backup of your key file. You can use the same key(file) with the linux version.

I've got a cd-key from q4base/quake4key in Windows 8.1. But it didn't work out. First of all, it's on 1 letter bigger, than space in Quake 4. It's started with "!", so I've tried all variants with and without first and last letter. No result.

You cannot copy the key from the file, it contains binary characters. Copy the whole file. You have to put it into ~/.quake4/q4base, not the game directory.

Thanks, It worked. Quake 4 is running, but it has no sound and multicore cpu is not supported via options. The sound is probably my fault, cause I add another audiocard few days ago. Multicore is not critical, but a little bit sad.
Oh, well. Thanks again.

There's another executable, which should have multicore. It may or may not start though. For sound, look for common libs in the game directory, like libstdc++, libSDL etc., and remove/rename them, so newer versions from your system can load. AFAIK it fixes sound, as long as ALSA is selected in game options.

Ok, it works. Almost.
1. The sound was fixed by clicking on every button in pavucontrol. I have no idea which one is worked. But sound is ok now.
2. There is an option: $quake4 --smp . And it works.

What doesn't work is antialiasing x16. x8 - fine. After I've set x16, quake have started to crush on load. Fix - delete all config files, except for the key and start again.

I appreciate your help, really.

x16 MSAA isn't supported by pretty much any GPU. Maybe some SLI setups or some pro cards may have it, but certainly not your average gaming rig. I've never seen that setting working on any version of the game engine, on any operating system.

x16 antialiasing works on windows version.

I have created a guide for this, just incase the thread gets deleted etc.
