SMAC works fine SMAX crashes at launch. Any ideas?

I just installed Tinkers Mod and it seems to work fine so far...

Downloaded the Thinker Mod. Installed, ran it as instructed (from Thinker.exe). Game crashes at a slightly later point now (founded first base, two pop ups about research, then crash)

Played at launch with no problems for hours, came back to the game and crashes almost immediately after starting a new game. (SMAC - not tried AX).

People are blaming a windows patch. Is there a solution to have this game run without needing 3rd party mods?

I mean, you can always run it inside Virtual Machine running older version of Windows. Or Linux + Wine / Proton
