Game crashing after latest windows 11 update

Specifically Alien crossfire. It seems that folks in the GOG ecosystem are having the same problem. Anyone find a work around?

enabled PRACX in "alpha centauri.ini' disabled forced old voxel algorithm, set screen width to 1024. otherwise movies were broken.

I was able to roll back to 23H2 successfully from Settings > System > Recovery > Recovery Options > Go Back

I cannot live without my Alien Crossfire.

I lost the fan patches (from my GOG.com install of the Planetary Pack) when I uninstalled & reinstalled the game as a first post-update troubleshooting step. I will have to try @djdunn's install method & see if that's more successful.

I received a follow-up response from GOG Support this morning. I was asked to check that DEP (Data Execution Prevention) was on its default setting (it was), then reinstall the game and add it to my antivirus/firewall software's exception/trusted list (done; whitelisted with IoBit Malware Fighter Pro), and then install the June 2010 Direct X Runtime Package (the MS link worked; followed instructions from the suggested YouTube video). The "sea levels rising/all factions can now build Ascent to Transcendence" first-turn pop-up bug is gone from the PRACX version of Alien Crossfire, but the "hotseat multiplayer next turn" first-turn pop-up bug still appears in the other version of Alien Crossfire (the first option in the "Additional executables" tab. I assume the original Alpha Centauri game still runs normally after these steps -- but of course, Alien Crossfire is what I'd really like to be able to play again. It's unfortunate that the simple fixes GOG Support has suggested thus far haven't fixed the problem.
Don't yet know if any of these steps would be helpful with the Steam install of the Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack.

I just tested the game, tiny map, won instantly, it works. However I always ask the same thing from everyone experiencing crashes from any game. Have you adjust your paging file manually and not what Windows recommends? Adjusting your paging files will often improve game performance from whatever the age the game is from. The paging files uses drive space. Mine is set at 49152 mb. I hardly ever get a crash from any game.

Also when I launch this game it immediately goes to the game setup screen bypassing all those movies that generally make older games crash.

I only run the Steam version and I've never installed any outside patches for it.

I would try that, but I don't have the smarts to do it. Loved Alien Crossfire for years and now it crashes when loaded.

Tried this, alas doesn't work. Likely still due to issues with the latest Windows 11 updates. Ran fine on Windows 10

Same problem here. I was playing a game, then did a Windows "Update and Shutdown", and the next morning I tried to load the saved game and got a 'multi-player password prompt' and the game won't start. This is the GOG version of SMAX (SMAC still works).

I increased page size and Alien Crossfire continues to crash. here's my Windows OS info:
