Does it run on Win 11?

So I've got this on GOG but even after 2 hours tinckering with mods I just can't get smac to run (only the expansion runs).

Will the steam version work out of the box?

thats odd, i got the GOG one also tho i bought in 2016 is my version is setup_sid_meiers_alpha_centauri_2.0.2.23 tho i`m sure proably long updated since then, i installed it last night after many years on win11 steam deck (docked) worked straight. away.

The GOG version needs you to launch using the launcher, not either of the .EXE files (in my experience).

The Steam version does launch, but it does minimise to desktop during the intro video. Skipping that might make startup easier.

The Steam version worked fine for me on Windows 11 right "out of the box." I was also able to find the faction editor and bring in a faction I created in the GOG version.

I haven't tried any mods, however.

works out of the box for me, but no map scrolling - not with mouse, not with keyboard. Will try to install some mods.

It starts without problems for me on Win 11 (and Win 10 on my laptop last night). Specs in profile, if curious.

During the intro video(s) it changes the resolution so that my 2nd monitor goes a bit haywire, but it normalizes when the intro is over and I get the game menu, and into the game.

I haven't played it much yet (fell asleep as soon as I launched it on my laptop in bed last night ), but looking forward to exploring this!

turns out fully zoomed out small map just fit into the screen so there was nowhere to scroll :)
but recommended mods (no.1 and no.2 as per suggestions here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3174853233) did fix zoom in/out with mouse wheel and game is now fully playable just looks a bit ugly. May be will need to try GLSMACK update too.

I have the GOG version running on my Win 11 desktop, but it took a LOT of troubleshooting with GOG tech support (and installing a couple of the update patches/mods outside of GOG.com, as directed by the GOG tech support guru) to get it running. That version currently runs fine, BUT the video cutscenes (intro movies & Secret Projects) run in just the central portion of the monitor screen, and one does have to load the game from the GOG Galaxy launcher. My husband sprang for the Steam version this afternoon, and got it running immediately on his Win 11 computer (which didn't already have any version of SMAC or SMACX installed); however, when I tried to download the Steam version on my computer, I'd get just the initial Firaxis logo screen, then dump back to desktop. I uninstalled from my C drive (a 256GB solid-state drive, which might have been getting close to full), reinstalled it on my D drive (a 1TB hard drive), verified the integrity of the installed files, and attempted loading it again -- to similar results. (A minute or two of "twiriling circle of loading" on a black screen after the Firaxis logo, then dump to desktop again.) Same lack of progress whether I attempt opening from the Steam library or the Steam-installed desktop icon.
Feeling rather frustrated at this point, especially since the Steam installation on husband's computer appears to have fixed the resolution issues with the GOG version. Hope Steam patches/updates/suggests a fix that'll actually work on my Win 11 computer -- and soon!

Believe me Steam will not move a finger for this or any other game. They'll just point you to game support or offer refund (if not played more than 2 hours I think and purchased not longer than 2 weeks ago, somethign like that).

Thanks guys 'n gals for all the answers. I have now actually found a fix on the steam forum that makes the game at least start :-) Although it comes at the price of not being able to watch the intro movie. See Website link
