Use protontricks to run winecfg, in drives tab, check "use dotfiles" box, so you can see your install path in ~/.steam/[rest of the path].
Download scient patch and pracx, stick in your installed folder for SMAC.
Use protontricks to run task manager, select "new task" and browse to your installed SMAC folder where you just put the patches. Run the scient patch first, then pracx afterwards.
Now, if you're in Gnome, the final step is to stop it from popping up the irritating force quit/wait dialogue. Older games hate this, especially if they have issues losing window focus. I was freezing on firaxis logo after FMV intro until I changed my application timeout to much higher than the default 5 seconds in Gnome.
Run the following in terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.mutter check-alive-timeout 60000
Runs best in vanilla proton 8
Choose to run SMACX instead of vanilla, always.
Now I have widescreen, windowed mode from pracx, the latest community fixes from scient, etc. And best of all, unlike the original Steam install, I also now have a mouse cursor.
Kiss my weekend goodbye!
