I have always used the GoG build, and can confirm that it runs great on Win10. Have not tested Win11.
The added bonus, if you go with GoG, is that you're supporting a DRM free platform.
Regardless, you may want to use one or both of these mods (developed by the same person), which improve the game in many ways:

Other than that, I haven't seen much difference between the versions, only that you don't get the Alien Crossfire dlc on Steam.

The steam version requires EA play.
That should make the choice pretty easy.
I haven't an EA play subscription and can play the game on Steam.
I can see a difference between the GOG and Steam version in the setup, the Steam version was widescreen immediately, but the GOG version needed some tweaking to support widescreen in my experience, but that could be my aging install.
If time is right for anything, now's the time for Alien Crossfire II. Please.
Even before Civ VII
You should be able to set the shortcut to SMAX by "browse file location." There should be a shortcut there that you can use for your method.
