Which planets have an atmosphere?
I haven't started to explore and research all the planets yet, so can someone just tell me which of the planets in the system have an atmosphere?

Kerbin, Duna, Jool, (Laythe but is a moon), Eve.

It's worth noting that although several planets have an atmosphere, the density really makes a huge difference. Eye's atmosphere is extremely dense, making it great for aero-braking manoeuvres but very hard to get from the surface back into orbit.
Duna's atmosphere is very thin compared to Kerbin's - it's still possible to land with parachutes but you'll need more of them than on Kerbin and may even need to use engines to slow down a bit before deploying them.
Laythe is very similar to Kerbin in many ways - it has liquid water and grasslands. Its atmospheric density and gravity are similar, and it is the only body other than Kerbin with an oxygen atmosphere, allowing the use of jet engines.
Lastly, Jool is a gas giant, so while you can use its atmosphere for aero-braking, it's impossible to land on the surface.

Laythe doesn't have grasslands. It's all sand.

It is possible to land on Jool, I've seen people do it before.

If you zoom out in mapmode (or whatever it is oficially called) you can doubleclick on any planet to focus on it. This also brings up two buttons on the right of the screen that give some background info on the planet/moon and some data on the planet (radius, mass, if it has an atmosphere and extend of it, etc.)

You can not infact land on Jool without cheating, as Jool has no surface too land on. It's a gas giant and should mostly consist of ( obviously ) gas. Your ship explodes at a certain point after getting lower that 0 meters. The cause will be "due to overheating" or "crashed into the clouds". For some time after you have passed 0 meters the atmosphere is so dense that the ship is simply crushed. The same effect would apply for the ocean, where the deeper you go the higher the pressure becomes.

I 've seen a pic of a kerbal on Jool all squashed. I think it will have a surface like jupiter.

You can. I've seen some videos of people landing. Although the didn't actually land but float and as soon as they left the cockpit and tried to touch the center their Kerbals died.

I think Scott pulled it off but I'm not sure.

that's not landing, at a certain point the ship glitches due to gravity and atmospheric density and floats. there is no surface whatsoever, as it is a gas giant. I've been there, I should know.

What did the air smell like?

Recently dropped 2 types of ships - chute and skycrane - on Jool...

Both came out "the other side" before asploding into a myriad of rocketry type particles...
