I've already checked several threads in KSP forum before posting here. None of them appears to be conclusive to me.
Oh well, I think I need to be patient then. Actually, it is possible to scan at 100x warp.
Now, this generates another question. If the fastest way to scan is in a high speed low orbit, what is the usefulness of the KE-S110 Medium Survey Unit (with max altitude of 1000KM), considering that the lighter KE-S210 Compact Survey Unit (with max altitude of 300KM) can do the same job using much less electricity?
One of the advantages is it has a smaller interval for scanning, so you can go faster without it skipping hexes. This is what I know, there may be other benefits as well.
Well, there were no hexagons SEVEN MONTHS AGO, when I started this topic. The Kethane map was a small window with thin lines representing scanned areas, it was hard to see anything or any difference.
But yes, you may skip some hexes using the small survey unit, especially when orbiting large bodies (higher orbital speed). I usually scan at 100x timewarp at minimum altitude for such warp speed.
For all I know it can only scan for further away. That's literally all about it.
