Are you sure you placed them in correct position namely the right side up?
Can you make a screenshot of the vessel on the right?
You can see me docking here:

Here are the two directions so you can check your craft. The one on the right should be pointed outwards. They are fairly distinct once you get used to them. The outer ring (on the right side) has more detail and a ring around it which I suppose houses magnets. The inner ring (left one on my picture) is totally flat.
cheers it will be an impressive structure... one day
Had to flip it (launch it upside-down) coz it was top heavy, that wasnt hard...
technically, im good at making ships safe for repeated launches, and getting into whatever orbits... then the fine tuning which lets me down on many games...
shame i cant make them for others to fly, would get somewhere then haha
Ok, well back to the engineering dept, will post a shot when/if they link up.
Thanks again
Also you can share your plans. They are saved in Steam/steamapps/common/Kerbal/saves/yourname/ships/SPH and VAB folders.
They are standard text files so you can also past a text somewhere like pastebin and share it.
Don't be discouraged. Everybody makes mistakes. If I had a penny for each time I forgot to add landing legs or set up action buttons I'de be rich now.
but...
My first docking...
PHAT!
ive been playing this for about 2 weeks solid and this is my best acumplishment so far...
honestly im loving the way it makes my head hurt haha....
next stop, youve guessed it...
TO Da Mun
It gets simpler and you can pull it off in under 15 minutes once you get the hang of it but it's still the most fiddly and satisfying thing to do. Landing is ok but there's just something about two ships finally coming together (totally not a sex thing although your ship design reminds me of some stuff but hey my ship ended up looking like a swastika when I had all my panels extended so who am I to talk). :)
Oh yeah almost forgot... Congrats!
But, while on the subject, has anyone had problems docking small clamps to large ones? I attached two sections together, one with an orange tank, and thought I'd try to refuel my long distance lander to it (trying for an Eeloo there and back mission), and had trouble lining them up. I got frustrated and am now docking a third section that has the regular ports to it (the two sections didn't provide enough fuel for the craft anyway), but am curious if anyone else has had issue with different clamps coming together.
