Really all you need is three. However, the more you have /could/ lead to more stability when actually landing but I've always found 3-4 good enough.

i have started practicing with 4,but if more is "potentially" better,i will try it
thanks!

I use 2 legs. Only because 1 leg doesn't seem to work.

For new guys of KSP, Anon's advice is probably best though.

Any number above 2... ;)

Ok Lets make that any number above 2 that fits your current ship design.

The greater the number of legs the more stable your craft should be.

Assuming that you installed them correctly.
No joke most of the more powerfull engines will stick below most landing legs so you need to find a way to get the legs to extend BELOW the engine's exhaust.

I've seen pic's posted that have landing legs attached to the very bottom of a fuel tank that had an atomic motor attached and they wonder why their engines fall off\get destroyed on landing.

Also it depends on the weight\weight distribution of the craft.
The_Mell added an example pic below.

3 legs is the obvious minimum. 4 will be more stable for a taller craft. 5-8 seems a bit overkill, though if you are expecting to lose a leg or two with a rough landing...

Remember that more legs == more weight == less delta v (more fuel consumption to get where you are going)

Less legs mean less weight and that's always good.
On the other hand: more legs can compensate hard landings.

Oh, and with career mode you can try to substitute few big landing gears with many smaller legs - try...

I have a lander with eight legs, but it's made to take almost all the landing shock and keep a belly released rover from taking damage.

Lmao, Awesome pic The_Mell

It should be the number of external engines you have or a greater factor, like if you have 3 external engines, 3 landing legs would work fine or if you had 2 external engines, 4 would work the best since 2 is obviously 2 little. :KSmiley:

But too many landing legs severely effects your delta V capacity. Its something like 50 m/s per leg in my experince.
