You can, however, beef up the plane building/simulation in the game with mods, if you want a better experience. Ferram Aerospace includes a correct (albeit hard as balls) atmospheric model, the Firespitter pack has propellers, and there are mods like B9 which include hybrid jets, VTOL engines, more wing parts, etc.
That... would entail an incredibly complicated game balance, not to mention airplane building is generally considered more complicated than rocket design, if anything because you must take lift and drag into account.
There is, however, an option to "warthunderize" KSP: just off the top of my head I know there are at least a multiplayer mod and a weapons mod (missiles and lasers). Lag and glitches aside, I'd say you should technically be able to get together with a couple friends and spaceplane-joust the hell out of each other :D
(Or helicopter-joust, or propeller-old-timey-plane-joust, or UFO-joust, or gyrocopter... you get it.)
I guess it's because you can already do this IRL...

If you're willing to learn how to use a 3D Modeling Program, Hobbico's RealFlite simulator lets you add your own aircraft to the (already extensive) list of planes, helecopters and novelty aircraft included in the software. I'm sure a few other RC and even some full-size flight sims have this capability as well.
