"No operational SAS module or no pilots on board"?
Why do I get this error message when I try to engage SAS? There are two pilots sitting right there in my spaceplane cockpit.

are you sure they are actual Pilots and not Scientists or Engineers?
Only Kerbals with the Pilot training can engage the SAS.

If you really need SAS you could always add a probe core. The first one to have SAS capability is the Octo one.

Ah, yes of course. The skills update is new to me, thanks.

Sas is not available on early probecores or new pilots
To use basic SAS functions with a pilot you need 1 star (wich you easily earn after achieving orbit around kerbin), for the probeparts it will tell you what kind of assists if any is available if you right click on the item in the selection window.

I have a five star pilot on board but it still says I can't SAS

The pilot needs to be seated in a command module.

I have this error too. I have 2 Pilots, one is Jeb, in an MK.2 cockpit. Tried everything, from switching the places, to eva then getting back in. Nothing. No SAS or Pilots. Seem like they broke something in 1.2 prerelease?
