Best way to stay landed on Gilly?
I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to stop sliding and bouncing and things of the sort once I've touched down, I've found that no matter how slow I land I always slide or bounce to some degree. Of course I stop eventually but it's still annoying.

I've never landed, but I would suggest maybe trying out downwards-facing thrusters.

I often lock suspension on my landing struts , and fire my RCS "upwards" at the last moment (pushing the craft down) in low G landings. Requires a very soft touch landing speed wise. Time it just right, right has you touch, and you can "glue" yourself down. Otherwise you're at the mercy of the terrain itself.

Of course, you have to stop squirting mono into space at some point, so once you're stable, quit with the RCS. You might still have sliding and the like depending on conditions of the landing zone itself however. Landing on a hill side is a great way to kill Kerbals, lol.

Edit...Oh, and I believe it is the "N" key to fire the RCS this way in staging mode, but it might be "H". Funny how you can do something 100+ times by pure repitition, but not remember the key..:rfacepalm:

From Reddit:

"You don't need to switch to Translation-mode to use your RCS to maneuver for docking: the IJKL keys will do that in normal staging mode, and H and N thrust forward and reverse with your RCS respectively - even from the map view, so long as you have the Navball up (which is also required to change your thrust settings). This can be extremely useful for fine-tuning at a maneuver node to optimize a distant intercept point."

Nice to know for my next time on Gilly.

On the other hand my first (three) landings would not be so memorable without that backflip after first touchdown... :KOh:

come down slow and steady, and try to negate any sideways movement before your even close to touching down
Remember its not a race ;)

Landers on Gilly? Oh please, just put your ship in an approx. 10K orbit and just jump down on EVA.

Just tie a rope around it

Once I tried using the asteroid grabby claw, but that doesnt work on planets.

A harpoon/grapple cable launcher sort of thing would be pretty sweet, though admittedly of less use on most other bodies.

Though, I wonder if the anchor from KAS would work on Gilly (it's mainly meant for like, airships, but you can use multiples to keep other things from sliding about too..I've only tested it on Kerbin, though, so I don't know how well it would work on other bodies).

Also try to make use of the terrain :) Since you will fall very slightly, try to find a lower point on the terrain so that you can't drift down any lower. I've experienced myself that on high points the craft will always want to drift downhill very slowly.

I think the grappling hook would work the best for Philae-style (I know Philae used harpoons to land) harpoon landings, as they do work on planets.

Isn't that the whole point of the thread already...?

My next contract is "Test kerbodine KR-2L advanced engine landed at gilly ." Not going to be easy.
Gertjan Dec 3, 2014 @ 2:13am
i use RCS for that.
i typically use them to thrust downwards anyway, since it takes forever to land otherwise.
pushing yourself down helps with the bounce.

also, to test an engine tested landed at gilly: put the engine upside-down, thrust downwards to stay landed
