You seen the picture of the 3 kerbals with planet in the back round......and 2 of em look like they about to fill their pants...and the 3rd looks like he on a fun roller coaster.....thats Jeb!
Ingame he wont freak out unless something blows up within a few meters of him....then he only worried for a second....
So naturally, he sees a lot more action than other Kerbals, unless you decide otherwise and select another Kerbal. Since most people use 1 man pods to do stuff (this is before .90 and the introduction of Kerbal specialisations) you generally ended up with Jeb running the mission. And naturally, since Jeb was the first to go, he was generally the first to get stranded either:
In orbit
On the surface of some celestial body (generally the moon)
In orbit of some celestial body
Underneath a celestial body (I'm looking at you, Minimus)
Splashdown at Laythe or Eve with no hope of return
resulting in a mission to rescue Jeb. At least once in a standard Kerbal Space Program playthrough, you will have to rescue Jeb from your own mistakes. It happens, but he's never bothered about it.

Yeah, what is with people not bothering to even write the name correctly?
That's not to say the non badass ones can't be favourites too, but you can even find other badasses in recruiting new astronauts. I'n my pre 0.90 save I had a genuine badass, Gerrie, who turned out to be a an engineer with the professions update.
It's easy to tell a badass kerbal, they never, ever look anything close to scared or unhappy, maybe neutral, but more often than not laughing maniacally.
Gerrie basically acts exactly as Jeb does, his stats were'nt amazing, but nor are Jeb's, so basically the badass gene is hidden.
A good test is to hurtle them towards ground without deploying the parachute till late; guaranteed to identify any kerbal badass, all others will be scared, if not terrified at that altitude.

Jeb, Bob and Bill were the first Kerbals in the game, all introduced at the same time. But while Bob and Bill would react with fear, Jeb would usually be laughing, creating this myth that he's fearless and unflappable. It's stuck with the community since then.
I have to pretend to like him, but really I just want the bum dead.
Think I'll go stage another accident right now in fact....

Edit: woah there, badass isn't censored, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is?
