Launch North or South to get into the right sort of orbit.
Its much better to launch into polar orbits when possible...depending on size of body your orbiting it can take ALOT of deltaV to change your orbital inclination that much.
At like 300Km orbit around Kerbin it takes aomething like 1100 deltaV to get from 0deg to 90deg orbit.
I've been having the same issue -- can't transmit science since the .5 update.. tried it with and without remote tech (usually play with it).. same as you no message at all and no science sent.
Try updating your mods, both of you. AntennaRange, SCANsat and RemoteTech behave strangely with 1.0.5, but their authors have already released new versions. That solved it for me.
