Black screen at the launch pad
I updated both KSP and the 3 mods: Engineer Redux, MechJeb and Toolbar.

It turns out that I can't fly. I can go inside all buildings at the start of the career mode, but when I try to lauch my first vessel the screen goes black.

The navball, contracts, toolbar and UI along with Jeb's pic remain, but the world disappears. I can go back to the Space Center, but then all I see is the milky way and nothing more. It's like Kerbin is gone.

What's that? Has this happened to anyone before?

You can't play mods for 1.0 it will just destory the game and it doesn't matter what they do unless they are updated for 1.0 they will do this until you unistall them or wait for an update for 1.0

MechJeb is updated for 1.0, but I have the same thing - black screen at launchpad.
Upd. I also heve installed Romfaerer addon and it haven't been updated. After removing it thing became to look OK.
But MechJeb calculates TWR incorrectly.

Perform a clean reinstall. That solved it for me.

Forget about mods until further notice :/

I don't know what Romfaerer might be, but certainly I had not installed it. Only the 3 mods mentioned in my original post, and only removing all 3 and reinstalling worked for me.

Glad you managed to find an easier way.

Romfarer is an author of "LAZOR Systems". I had installed the docking camera from that package.
