Everything is overheating and exploding!
OK, I'm not one to start screaming bug, but I've already read some other people here are having problems with stuff exploding, and now 2 of my space stations have also gone boom. Something is either very wrong, or maybe it's a lack of the new radiator parts, but everything is glowing red hot, and in the case of the space stations, white hot

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=467586241

I turned on Debug and set ignore max temp, and engaged the temp overlay to get this screenshot. The second I turned ignore max temp off it exploded. It started with one solar panel that kept getting hotter and hotter, and spread to the upper half of the station.

When I checked my other ships and stations, they're also all glowing red, and I expect a couple to also explode soon.

I don't know what's going on, if it's a bug, or if ships need the new radiator parts to stay cooled off. I actually hope it's just a bug. If I need to relaunch a bunch of ships with new radiators that's gonna set my game back bad!

my materials bay is exploding in orbet for no reason now too. just started happening two days ago.
I just had this happen with an octogonal strut. Granted, one explosion out of thousands of potential incidents is pretty good relative to other reports.

I was thinking the same thing. I started this thread, but reading thru everyone's responses, it appears most of you had much worse problems than I experienced.

What's really weird is that my radiator pannels had no effect on reducing heat.

Aragosnat - there is a bug, though. In my case, the overheating parts where on a subsonic plane, flying at 250 m/s ! I had saved mid-flight, the overheating happened after reloading, and disapeared (for the whole flight) when I opened the service bay for a second. I tested keeping the bay closed, it resulted in a big satisfying boom.
I think that there is some glitch with service bays and heat conduction when loading a save.

Okay. That makes more sense. Yes. That certainly would be a bug. Might be a good thing to remember and not F5 while flying. Does it happen without the engines turned on as well? Hot key them to turn off then F5 then load to see if they go boom.

No, it's definilty my fault, I only put 2 nukes on this shuttle. If I had 4 or 6 I'd probably be OK, but with two I have an 11 minute burn time to Mimnus. The radiator panels helped, and the engines didn't blow, but a strake sitting next to one exploded. Luckily that's all that blew. So I let her cool down, then I took her back to the station to wait for a replacement

Yeah. IT is very likely the burn time is making the engines go boom. But, at least the radiators do help kool them down faster.

@Aragosnat I may have been unclear. When I said nuke, i wasnt referring to the engine but the RL bomb. Also the ship was mid way to the mun, all the engines had been off for 20min and the nose pointed directly at the sun, so the rest of the ship would have worked as a radator. Of my 10 ships only the one with a 2.5m service bay had this issue, and it had been fine until I switch focus, you can tell by the thermal heat bars that come up (eg. on re-entery)...

I got to watch the radiator panels in action yesterday, and yeah, they definitly work. I launched a space station, and the main engines are an asparagus set-up with twin-boars (I think that's the name) as the center engine, and those can easily overheat, which they started to do. I was already throttling back, so they didn't blow, but they caused the next stage to also start heating up from red to orange by the time I staged the twin-boars. The twin-boars did have radiators on them, which may have helped keep them from completely blowing... that I'm not sure of.

What I am sure of is this. My next engines (mainsails) were already hot, but because I was out of the atmosphere, I was able to extend the huge radiator panels, and with the temp overlay enabled, I watched them almost immediately turn the same shade of orange as my engines, even though they weren't connected directly to them. Nothing else was hot, just the engines and the panels. And when I right-clicked one, the status was: cooling. It stayed this way until I achieved orbit.

So it took about a day (game time) to get a refueler up to the station and docked, and in that time, I kept checking back, and sure enough, the radiator panels and engines were all cooling off nicely. I wish I had though to put on a thermometer, that would have been fun to watch. By the time it was all refueled and ready to continue, it was also all cooled off to a nice red.

The really interesting part is the mainsails that were starting to heat up are part of the skycrane I use to put the station in orbit, but the big radiator panels are located on the main body of the station, which is quite a distance away from said engines. So apparently the radiators, or at least the big panels, don't have to be directly connected to an overheating part to still work.

I'm sorry I didn't get screenshots, but I plan on launching another station later today. If I can mimic the conditions (without blowing up) I'll try and get a couple.

just launched a thing, and my fuel tank just exploded for no freaking reason just before reaching the maneuver node so i could get into orbit. totally ripped my ship in two taking its main engine off leaving me with my backup ion drives... not sure whats going on but that tends to fail.. hard.

I'm getting the same thing It's totally broken

I knew what you ment by the bomb bit. Just needed to be sure are you using the nuke engine or not. Which you still have not mentioned.

Thing is. Even with engines off for 20 minutes. Under the heating and aero system. The parts are likely not cool off fast enough. In this case. The parts within a closed bay are encased in an oven. As there is no place for the heat to go and the bay is already dumping as fast as it can to space and the enclosed parts. That would be why it could be considered not a bug. Is it annoying. Yes. I agree that it is. It is something none of us have had to deal with before.

Looking at what you are trying to do. Even with pointing the craft nose to the sun. The parts could still be absorbing more heat then the bays can get rid of regadless of engines types. Which if the bays are supposed to act like ovens. Also would the engines not be better sited for being pointed towards the sun? As that is usually the fat part on the craft. And the parts you want to keep cool safe behind the fat mass. In my case last night. It too over 40 minutes with 4 medium rotating radiators on the dark side of Kerbin to cool parts down enough. And I know the test I did on Kerbin. That it takes a lot longer to cool down without any radiators.

Thing is. The bays themselves might not be the real problem. Just how the heat system is applied is likely the problem. Last night. F5 on the pad then lauched it. Tried to make the craft orbit. Obvious it could not entered the atmosphere getting the flame effects started then F9 back to the pad. Craft of pad got re-entry effect for a second or so. While nothing went boom. I can see what might be causing the problem that happened with "TheSoundOfTrees" plane. When loading back. Something was not being cleared out. Very likely the orbital speed. Yes. That would be a bug/glitch.

Just want to ask. When using the thermometer and getting the temp to be displayed and while watching the numbers change. Does anyone else get it to change numbers a bit when the game autosave?

Okay... As a person who was going through all the explosions and such. If your trying to save a career. You are going to have to delete all your ship models and start from scratch. If you want to bring people home that are in now faulty vessels. You will probably have to cheat.

That said, once I started making new designs, I haven't had an overheat explosion except when reentering decomissioned bases and such.... or trying to get a plane to go over 1000 m/s.

You're just gonna have to accept that all pre 1.0.3 are now probably faulty. After reading the one post from SQUAD, trying to put a spin on it about fostering new creativity. Well, I made all new and better designed bases.

Created in the most current version of Kerbal, and only using passive radiators, and this base is fine. It'll take a ship to recover or rotate crew, but that could be fun.

Same reports of the problem on the forums: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/126664-MAJOR-Heating-Bug

It happened for me today. Brand new ship. No solution as far as I know, for now. :KSad:
For some it is related to FAR. Not for me and the rest.
