Report a translation problem
You don't actually need a Kerbal up there, but some things might be disabled if you don't (can't control the rotation of the station without someone in the control pod, for example, and you need at least one Kerbal in the lab for it to be functional). Some mods require more Kerbals to be up there (MKS, Station Science, etc.)
There you can choose the icon you want that vessel to show on the map and in the tracking station.
Stations don't have to be manned to dock at the or to switch to them, but then you can't control them (unless you also have a probe core attached).
EDIT: Damn, ScruffyBamboo was faster :)
Stations may be unmanned I think, but unless you have a probe core in there, you might not be able to control it.
