assembling a ship in space
If i wanted to individually launch a bunch of fuel pods then launch the chasi into orbit and some other parts , and then piece them together in space could I? and if so is there a tutorial on this.

It is entirely doable to make big ships in orbit. Most of my missions now I'm runnig have to be run this way.

There is a good guide to get you started. If will explain the ins and outs of getting a ship built in orbit. You can also peek through my screenshots and find several examples of ships put together in orbit. Toward the bottom should be a series of sceenshots showing, kind of, the assembly.

Look for space station tutorials out there. The rendezvous and docking is the same. The mod Kerbal Attachment System (KAS) will help you on your journey. It lets you place struts in space via EVA and helps making large constructions stable.

Yes. If you've ever docked before then it'll be extremely easy.

It's more efficient to assemble your craft off world than it is to launch it all in one go, provided you know what you're doing.

sweet, tyvm, this makes me excited, I've been working on launching up the jumbo sized fuel pods , I'm not very good at keeping them in 1 place so they are kinda scattered around in orbit, but i should be able to pick them up fairly quickly.

Not true, unless you use mods to strut it in space. I've sent up some really big behemoth ships, on huge asparagus launcher; far easier to do that, then to try and line up docking ports perfectly, or having to fire engines at less than full power so you don't tear a multiple docked craft apart.

The above for example; I could have luanched the top, then docked the interplanetary part beneath it (and I have done it that way before), but it was far easier to do it all in one luanch.

I'd say the exact opposite of you; It's more effiecent to assemble your craft on ground, than to do it in orbit, provided you know what you are doing.

use mechjeb mod it can auto pilot your modules together.

thats as large as i go, the large clampotrons, and lots of rcs, 4 launches to assemble, BUT , KAS struts are great to stop the clamp wobble that will occur- the heavier the load the more bendy it becomes, , KAS will make it rigid if you use long lengths of strut

I really, really recommend getting Kerbal Attachment System (KAS) and using the strut attachment points to stiffen your ship up after assembling it in orbit. It makes all the difference in the world.

Efficient as in your game won't be as much of a slideshow if your rocket is particularly large or your PC particularly slow, your fuel tanks will all be topped off, your vessel begins its voyage in a low G environment with no atmosphere, and so on.

None of this is to mention the challenge and awe factor of creating a huge ship in space.

Extraplanetary Launchpads[forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com].

You can always try this mod if you wanna build stuff outside Kerbin. It's a pretty boss mod overall, and it includes resource transportation and assembly in space. Having tons of clampotrons in your ship isn't the best way to make sure it'll stay in one piece under acceleration.

I second Mechjeb use if you want to see it done and try afterwards. No need to see awkward Youtube videos if you don't want to, and it's one of the best ways to learn about how to do stuff.
