Curse Forge?
Never heard of it...

Just checked it out and was assaulted immediately by an enormous popup ad for "downloadian"... ugh... ok *close*... first impression fail... what's next?

OK...found the Kerbal section. Checked the mod list and *sort by* .... wait... what? No reviews? No stinking mod review system?! We have to rely on download count?! Seriously?! As clunky as SpacePort was it still had a review system (albeit a basic one).

Someone familiar with Curse please tell me I'm missing something obvious. Maybe I need to be logged in, set my options, whatever...

I'm mostly familiar with Nexus for mods (Skyrim, etc) which has pretty decent system and is fairly easy to find what you're looking for and filter out the junk.

Does curse have a Mod manager or something similar to NMM? Installing mods manually in KSP is tedious and at a certain point I end up just wiping it and reinstalling KSP clean when I need to update mods or it gets cluttered.

Also, should B9 be avoided now? I was considering starting a campaign with it, but it sounds like Squad has declared a secret war on their mod community judging from this post. What about other mods like kethane?

What? No! They have only changed the hosting for their mods. You can still get them without installing any additional software and mod support will most likely proceed as before. It is not even required that you download it from there and most modders keep an alternate personal Dropbox/Mediafire hosting as an alternative. It is safe to install B9 and Kethane, but B9 requires a couple of extra fixes to make it work with 0.23.5 since it's not been officially upgraded to work in the latest version.

Squad isn't starting any wars, they have only decided to partner with a mod hosting website.

Right.
Anyone still using those crapsites? :spazhorror: (both SpacePort and whateverthehell that "Curse" is)
Best place to get mods is always at the source, i.e. KSP forums.

True, but main reason I prefer to download off spaceport is cause they scan it for viruses. Now granted if a mod is popular enough that kind of proofs it for you because enough people are "going first", but still I imagine it might give people piece of mind before they try out some newer mods. Any idea if Curse does this too?

Apparently Curse does the opposite and makes sure you get a virus with your download ;p

Actually, it's not generally the downloads that cause the problem but the ridiculous amounts of advertisements, some of which have been known in the past to be infected with malware and viruses; and Curse's complete lack of care for these situations (which have been happening AT LEAST since 2009).

Yeah, I know, I was just being facetious.

Antivirus (if you'er still on Microsoft's OS) will do it for you as you download it.
Not to mention this kinda stuff doesnt go undiscovered for long.

Also, for nth-time over.. in most cases, antivirus does more harm than it prevents.
PC slowdown + false-positives + system corruption.

Yeah, that's part of the reason I've been sticking with Microsfot Security essentials for my main "always-on" protection, since it mostly just checks them against a list of known viruses rather than trying to play "detective". Other than that I have a few other programs that I boot up and run a scan if something seems fishy.

BTW, what OS do you guys use? I was pretty sure Windows was still the main one (I'm using 7 since it's still the best, waiting to see if 9 comes out well. They tend to get odd-numbered systems right :P)

I'm still using Windows 7. Windows 8.1 has really fixed a lot of problems with Windows 8, by the way.

By the way, if you want a good anti-virus program that doesn't use too much RAM, check out avast!. It's pretty lightweight for how effective it is. The only problem I've had with it is that it doesn't seem to like Steam - you have to add an exception for http://*.steampowered.com/* to the web filter.

Debian Linux, testing branch.
Also Windows 8 is much better than 7 from user point of view (DRM and other crap is bad though). Too bad a lot of people dont get it

You mean the same avast that deleted system files and blocks tech blogs and calculators on more than a few occasions?
That's the piece of malware you should keep away from anything with windows on it.

Viruses??? People are still worried about viruses?!?!

I guess my tech-savvy self has REALLY advanced farther than most people, since I don't even have Antivirus anymore AND STILL can rid my computer of any problem software. Not only that but using pretty basic backup software or even the integrated Restore system, I can get around any problem files that seem to ruin performance.

Maybe schools really need to focus on integrating computer sciences into curriculum, because the amount of complaints over things that are pretty simple to protect against seemingly grows as time goes on...

Yups, people are still illiterate as ever

Which happens to be the same avast! I have been using for the past several years without a problem.

Though I admit I did decide to skip that specific update because I actually do research before installing updates. I also managed to avoid that hacked Windows update that caused the same problem because I did my research.

So you recommend software that requires you to be paranoid about it's updates?
*slow clapping noises*

Jeez, some people are either masochistic, or.. well, certainly not lazy.
As I said - if you spend this much time at effin' AV, you will be better off without one.

Personally, I'd rather have an antivirus program that works, albeit with user involvement, than an antivirus program that's little more than useless bloatware with a GUI.

Of course, the best defense against malware is to not be lazy and careless in the first place, especially now that there are even viruses for Linux (they tend to be short lived due to the rapid response of the OS developers, but they still exist).
