What? No! They have only changed the hosting for their mods. You can still get them without installing any additional software and mod support will most likely proceed as before. It is not even required that you download it from there and most modders keep an alternate personal Dropbox/Mediafire hosting as an alternative. It is safe to install B9 and Kethane, but B9 requires a couple of extra fixes to make it work with 0.23.5 since it's not been officially upgraded to work in the latest version.
Squad isn't starting any wars, they have only decided to partner with a mod hosting website.
Anyone still using those crapsites?
Best place to get mods is always at the source, i.e. KSP forums.
Apparently Curse does the opposite and makes sure you get a virus with your download ;p
Actually, it's not generally the downloads that cause the problem but the ridiculous amounts of advertisements, some of which have been known in the past to be infected with malware and viruses; and Curse's complete lack of care for these situations (which have been happening AT LEAST since 2009).
Yeah, I know, I was just being facetious.
Antivirus (if you'er still on Microsoft's OS) will do it for you as you download it.
Not to mention this kinda stuff doesnt go undiscovered for long.
Also, for nth-time over.. in most cases, antivirus does more harm than it prevents.
PC slowdown + false-positives + system corruption.
BTW, what OS do you guys use? I was pretty sure Windows was still the main one (I'm using 7 since it's still the best, waiting to see if 9 comes out well. They tend to get odd-numbered systems right :P)
I'm still using Windows 7. Windows 8.1 has really fixed a lot of problems with Windows 8, by the way.
By the way, if you want a good anti-virus program that doesn't use too much RAM, check out avast!. It's pretty lightweight for how effective it is. The only problem I've had with it is that it doesn't seem to like Steam - you have to add an exception for http://*.steampowered.com/* to the web filter.
Debian Linux, testing branch.
Also Windows 8 is much better than 7 from user point of view (DRM and other crap is bad though). Too bad a lot of people dont get it
You mean the same avast that deleted system files and blocks tech blogs and calculators on more than a few occasions?
That's the piece of malware you should keep away from anything with windows on it.
I guess my tech-savvy self has REALLY advanced farther than most people, since I don't even have Antivirus anymore AND STILL can rid my computer of any problem software. Not only that but using pretty basic backup software or even the integrated Restore system, I can get around any problem files that seem to ruin performance.
Maybe schools really need to focus on integrating computer sciences into curriculum, because the amount of complaints over things that are pretty simple to protect against seemingly grows as time goes on...
Yups, people are still illiterate as ever
Which happens to be the same avast! I have been using for the past several years without a problem.
Though I admit I did decide to skip that specific update because I actually do research before installing updates. I also managed to avoid that hacked Windows update that caused the same problem because I did my research.
So you recommend software that requires you to be paranoid about it's updates?
*slow clapping noises*
Jeez, some people are either masochistic, or.. well, certainly not lazy.
As I said - if you spend this much time at effin' AV, you will be better off without one.
Personally, I'd rather have an antivirus program that works, albeit with user involvement, than an antivirus program that's little more than useless bloatware with a GUI.
Of course, the best defense against malware is to not be lazy and careless in the first place, especially now that there are even viruses for Linux (they tend to be short lived due to the rapid response of the OS developers, but they still exist).
