Quickest way to start gaining some points is to travel to different locations on Kerbal. For example; if you travel to a sea, beach, mountain, dsert, north / south pole ect and take science readings, crew reports and soil samples. Upon retrival of your crew and ship you will gain science points. The same goes for flight, take reports and science readings within each of the atmospheres and space, again send your Kerbal out of craft and get a report. Finally, get to other planets and then moon for more science.

PS. some easy points can be gained at both of your launchpads by running reports, sampling, renaming vessel ect

Hope this helps.

Getting science early can go a bit slow. Use multiple science modules and focus on unlocking science tech. They're on the bottom line of the research tree.

dont forget, there are 3 'biomes' right at the centre, 2 of them are reachable completely for free.
the biomes are: launchpad, runway and KSP.
some easy things you can to gain starter science is the following:
put a capsule on the runway (make sure you turn it vertical), then take a crew report, get out, eve report on the ladder, store it, walk down, eva report and surface sample from the runway.
second, do the same on the launchpad.
third: walk off either the runway or the launchpad onto the grass, get another eva and surface sample.
that should get you quite a bit of science, probarbly you can get 3 R&D nodes from doing that

great thread! I was trying a career mode and became stuck very quickly since I could not get any science points.

I have also noticed that I barely seem to be able to get 10 science points in a mission and I read some posts where people get points into the hundreds.
Is there a list available explaining what missions can be performed to get science points?

You can get a lot of info about science here [wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com]. I am not sure how capable you are in KSP, as you seem fairly new. But once you are able to create a stable orbit around Kerbin, you can do a lot of EVA's during one mission alone, while flying over the different biomes. That's usually a good starter to get you the gear to easily go to the Mun.

Just don't forget, that you can often do the different science experiments and reports not only on different biomes each but also in different altitudes, like on the surface or on low and high altitudes.

The more science modules you unlock as soon as possible the better. The previous posts are good pointers.

Start with just the capsule, don't even bother about propulsion, while on the pad get a crew report, exit the vehicle and get an EVA report and take a soil sample. Do this for the runway too. Land on the grass at KSP and do the same - crew report, EVA report, soil sample. Get crew reports as you ascend at various altitudes. Try and bring as much back with you as possible don't bother transmitting unless the transmit value is the same for the value if returned that way you are getting max points for each bit of research althought you may need to do multiple launches it is better to maximise the points available. Once you've done the areas and altitudes near KSP there are many more areas to repeat the same crew report, EVA report and where possible soil sample (I don't think you can get one on the water - :P). Goto the poles on Kerbin, there is also the desert, grasslands and mountains to collect data on. Once you get into space, the Mun and Minmus offers about as many biomes to run test and reports on as well. Take multiple Science Jnr modules as you can, they are great value, plus Mystery Goo, they love the Goo.

Eventually you'll be getting points like this and hopefully more!

There are 9 biomes on the home world. You can do all the science experiements and data collection, in each one. Doing this should give you the science to open up parts for going further afield. There is also a bunch of tests to be done in orbit around the home world, and in the atmosphere.

That said, career mode is not even close to finished. So at this point, you are simply beta testing the science collection portion.

When you've collected as much science from orbit around kerbin as you can and you're ready to try a bigger mission you may start considering a Mun landing. Go to Minmus instead. It's a lot further but only takes a bit more fuel to get there. Once you are there the lower gravity means you need much less fuel to get to the surface, back to orbit, then home to kerbin. You also get more science points for everything you do there.

My first landing got me about 850 points and a later extended mission brought the total to about 2200 before I moved on to the Mun.

The Mun is more difficult due to the higher gravity than minmus, but I've refined the lander and gotten better at landing with all the practice on minmus.
