You are right, there are many great mods for this game. In fact there are atleast a dozen I consider must haves. I wont list them all, but here are a couple that im sure you will enjoy.
Graphical:
"Visual enhancements, clouds and city lights".
"Universe replacer" for better skybox and HD textures. (download HD textures separately)
(Between these two mods, you can really up the beauty of this game.)
Gameplay:
"RasterPropMonitor", for working monitors
"Procedural fairings" for all your fairing needs.
"SCANsat" for radar mapping abilities. To find easter eggs and anomolies. :)
"Deadly re-entry" For realistic reentry. Now you really do need a heatshield for that capsule.
"asmi's ECLSS Mod- Life Support Mod" Vanilla gameplay there is no life support needs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Those are just few of the many awesome mods for this game. I recommend you check out the official mod forum, for more info on what all there is.

edit: The forum I linked is the best place to get mods, Spaceport doesnt always have everything. And it doesnt always have the latest version. The forum is very active.
PS: I should also mention that Youtube has many good tutorial videos. A great way to learn the basics. Scott Manly is one of the more well known video makers. If there is any game mechanic you want an explanation of, you can find it there.
There is also an official Wiki.
Watched a seven part episoide from DaSquirrelsNuts on YouTube. That's what got me hooked on the game. Gonna listen to Space Oddity, maybe that will help.
LOL. That's what I'm having problems with is orbits.

Universe replacer is more complicated. Place it in gamedata as well.
But you must go to the mod page in the official forums to get the links to the textures you wish to replace. Then choose which ones you like (download them and look, or check the pics if they have them) There are only about a dozen links in all
Then place them inside the universe replacer folder in gamedata, in the appropriate sub folder. I use this to just change the skybox, for the better stars. There are several to choose from. In different HD sizes. (its all very straightforward)..
You can also change the textures to planets and moons. However, any of the planets with atmosphere (and clouds) has already been changed by the visual enhancements mod, so dont change those, or they will conflict. (jool, kerbin, eve, laythe)... Just change the planets or moons that have no clouds. If you feel so inclined.
Personally I just stick to the skybox change. But thats the beauty of mods, it allows you to set it how you like.
