Report a translation problem
I know this isn't what you are asking for but I do know there are templates around for recoloring the suits. Not sure how far that would get you toward your goal though.
I assume you know about clicking the little hanger icon next to their names?
Although I'm talkin' about building a completely new character rig in blender and importing it into ksp as a new model. Sort of like how i'm makin' mod parts. haven't stumbled across that folder yet.
With parts it's relatively easy to model, texture and import your own part. Doesn't seem to be like this with the character models however.
I'm diggin' the new suit shaders tho.
(yes, I know, not a suit mesh but it's so completey hilarious and hiddeous I couldn't resist)
Edit: Oh by the by...
Fairly sure they are in the asset bundles. Gonna add, this technically means you are not allowed to mod them or the manner in which you mod them is limited but...well, not going to say do or don't.
The modding rules are essentially, anything in GameData is fair game. Outside of that folder things get more complicated.
