Debris removal without terminating them?
Anyone got ideas on how to get debris out of orbit without having to terminate them? This is because I find I'm ususally decoupling boosters just after I reach an orbit, which leaves it in the same orbit as me and it's usually about 20 meters below me. I want something that's a bit more realistic than just making them disappear. Thanks!

So you wan't to delete them without having to manually delete them on the comm center screen?

There's 2 options I can think of for that. First is make sure they burn up in the atmosphere. NASA does this nowadays because they realized debris a pain.

Second option is just turn off the debris in the options.

Well 3rd option if you really want to go wild is you could make a debris deorbiter ship. :)

If its only 20 meters, you could deorbit them with a Kerbal if you are a EVA ninja.

There's also mods with laser weapons and such that you could vaporize them or something.

It's really up to you. If you can think it, you can probably do it.

The only 'realistic' options I can think of, are a) you decouple them before you reach orbit, so they'll return to Kerbin via gravity and b) some means of (retrograde) thrust on them for deorbiting, that you may stage simultaneously to decoupling (rather unreliable, I'd imagine) or c) some means of thrust and a probe body to fully control said thrust and the direction of it (which may prove to be quite expensive).

It works like a charm. Ven's half-capacity Snubotrons placed inside the interstage of my upper stages, trigerred at decoupling, kick the stage a few klicks, clearing the main ship itself.

I always design my rockets in such a way that stages do not reach orbit... If they do reach orbit I make sure they have enough fuel left that the stage can retrograde and so to speak correct the orbit so it burn up in the atmosphere..
IF/when I do this on the long trips to otherp planets I aim directly for the planet and then decouple once I have enough speed ect.. after that I make a tiny course correction so my capsul enter orbit and do not crash directly into the planet.
But in general I mostly are carefull about debris arround kerbin since there are so much more space trafic there including sattelites and station ect.
A couple methods to try, one is a design that used torpedoes made of Oscar B tanks and separatrons.

This wasn't debris but a space shuttle docked to a station I used to test the destructive power.
My other method was to use Manos, a vessel I created specifically to grab onto debris and de-orbit it. At the time the claw had not been added to the game so I use landing legs and girders to make a means of grabbing debris and hauling it down.

The game actually has some tiny rocket boosters used for separating stages which if set up properly can activate upon decoupling a stage and decelerate it enough to deorbit. Note however that this will only work with a low orbit, and they're a fair distance up the tech tree so it'll be a while before one can obtain them in science or career modes.

I either make sure that stages don't make it to orbit. Or have the final stage with a control pod, power and fuel to deorbit with. I've also created a tug that has the grabber and I dock with that and deorbit the item. I also find that sometimes if I 'fly' the debris it will fall back after a few orbits. This is rather boring to watch so i only do it when I happen to be going away from the PC for a while.
that's what sepratrons are for... they give your stage a few dozen dV, enough to get your booster from a 100km circular to a 100X60 orbit, which will then decay (if you "fly" them).

i myself prefer to use the 'remore control' option; tack a small bit of RCS on them as well, and use any leftover fuel to refuel my space station(s); it's basically free fuel at that point, as i'd have thrown it away otherwise

I meant the vanilla game, but yes, there's mods for those too.

Ever heard of the Sepratrons? They're a bit fugly and OP for the task, but they're vanilla.
I believe KIS has explosives, but I'm not sure if you can stage them. I've never had any real reason to use them.

I think they just destroy a single part. Never used them either, love my Munar camps to have trash sprewn about.
Slap two mainsails to a can o gas and a probe core, figure out a way to orbit it and rendezvous with debris, then cannon the debris in the direction of retrograde. You have two engines, so you won't move.

....That debris will though.

Works for Kerbals too. If you time it right, you can transfer a Kerbal into super high orbit (also the moon) and if you time it REALLY right, you can sling the moon and transfer to Duna (Good luck figuring out what to do when you actually get there)

That's what I was talking about.
