how close can you get to the sun?
curious if there is a hard number or if it's more related to time you spend at certain altitude. i've been close enough that the bar that shows overheating is nearly full. if you try to EVA you die instantly. what have been your experiences?

Now, i dunno.

I've actually been toying with the idea of making a probe that's covered with radiator panels and seeing how close I could get.

I've sent a probe once towards the sun, just out of curiosity. (no cheats, no ablatives)

The probe melted about a quarter the way in from Moho's orbit. I don't have hard numbers for you, though. But that's clearly the primary difficulty of a sun-dive: Surviving the blasting fusion furnace. Maybe if you layered multiple heat shields you could last longer, but I doubt it'd take you much further.

"Why not land on the sun in winter when it's colder?"

There is a small spot you can land on during an eclipse.

That is dumb. You have to land at night.

I'm not sure if you actually mean it (I get jokes kinda hard), but "night" is the shadow of the earth. Imagine that the sun is a giant lightbulb (it's not, but whatever) and the earth (or Kerbin) is a huge apple. If you turn on the lightbulb, 45% of the apple would be lit up, 45% would be dark and the rest would be somewhere in between. So night is just the result of our self-centric and ignorant view of the world. Also, winter is caused by the same ignorance: the Earth (or Kerbin) doesn't rotate perfectly in line with the sun: its axis (the imaginary line that it spins around) is slightly misaligned, and thus the half that is away from the sun will be colder and the part which is pointed closer will experience summer.

Maybe someone doesn't get a joke, even if the spelling is atrocious.

There isn't a hard coded threashold. Pre-Heat you could collide with or land on the sun :P

Now that we have heat, it really depends on the craft you are sending.

Try flying close at night that is where the sun is the coldest.
Mudkest Dec 14, 2015 @ 8:32am
No no no no no, you got it all wrong. Hor air rises so you aproach the sun from the bottom where all the cold air is. Shees, how stupid can people be
