I tried the planetary base system and i found it hart to transport them to other planets. So id suggest usi the usi mod also includes life support.
USI is nice, but VERY complex. That's cool, but it also becomes the focus of your playing, and if you don't care that much about production chains, it can be a bit much. The models are nice, but it drives me nuts that the creator keeps CHANGING them. I mean, my Duna base changed designs twice and color three times before I was ready to actually launch it. That gets old. I also consider the fact that USI has its own life support to be a drawback, not an advantage, since I use TAC-LS (It's perfect, to me).
I don't really prefer one or the other for base building, since they're so different. I use both. Sometimes I even mix them.
If I HAD to choose just one, though, I'd pick Planetary Base System with no reservations.
However, I must warn you, MKS is poorly adapted to work with TAC-LS. The various storage systems are extremely difficult to adapt to several life support mods, so RoverDude didn't bother, and there are no containers for TAC resources in the Umbra mods. I am currently restoring TAC compatibility, one bit of code after another.
MKS's key selling points are numerous inflatable systems. The stuff is very compact, before popping to full size once deployed. You can also load them up empty and then deliver the heavy internal machinery (module 4 t, machinery 14 t) separately - or set up a production plant on-site.
Then I will sum up what we heard so far:
USI: parts are more easy to carry to other planets, but it has its own TAC life support style and is very complex about production chains.
Planetary Base System: Parts seems to be a little bit more difficult to carry, but it doesn't have a focus on production chains and looks better
MKS: is like USI and PBS together + more complex and has many production chains
MKS itself is designed to reduce the mass of equipment you're hauling by allowing you to manufacture it at your destination, from the resources you mine.
However, if you add the Extraplanetary Launchpads mod (and the mod that removes that mod's own parts), the high-end workshops of MKS can be used to launch ships, yes.
Wait, is USI the Release Version of MKS? Cause when I click on "release thread", I come to the USI site.....!?
USI is MKS/OKS.
USI is just "UmbraSpaceIndustries" which is what RoverDude calls his little ingame company. Or something.
