Gilly Claw Lander
Hello everyone, I made a Gilly lander and I looked around and couldnt find anyone who has thought of this. I used RCS fuel only on the lander, but thats not what I am talking about. What I did that I couldnt find anywhere else was that instead of using traditional landing legs, I used the asteroid grabbing Claw to firmly attach the ship to the surface. Gilly IS, after all, considered a captured asteroid. I saw a lot of people on the Internet talking about having difficulty with their landers tipping over, and this lander gave me no trouble. I am posting screenshots of the lander. I would like to know if anyone else has tried this, and what you all think of it.

I suggested this to people a long time ago, I would really like to see screenshots!

A fun idea, but pix or it didn't happen!

Unless I'm completely mistaken, you can't grab to Gilly because it's a moon. With the claw you can grab any part, but only parts, and asteroids are just oddly shaped parts as far as the game's concerned

Yes, you can grab Gilly with the Claw. It says it is "Locked" when it touches down, just like it does when you grab an asteroid or other "part."

And it behaves 1:1 like an asteroid added with ARM?
Sounds really strange.

If the claw grabs on Gilly, it grabs every Moon/Planet. Worth a try

No, the moon/planet does not behave like an asteroid when grabbed. the Claw merely serves to firmly attach the spacecraft to the ground.

So it helps to not tip over? Does it connect really strong?

It sounds really good for large Landers.... need to try. :)

It could also help landing topheavy landers on other places. I will try landing something tall on Mun using the Claw.

I landed a tall Mun lander with Claw today, and it did not grab the ground. This proves that the Claw cannot be used to firmly attach landers on the ground. When I landed my Gilly Grabber, it was travelling pretty much straight down, and at a slow speed, and I think the Claw was big enough to support the ship upright. This is unfortunate. Phisically, the Claw should be able to grab anything, I hope that in future updates it will be able to do this. In the meantime, though, we will just have to keep on making short landers.

Ok, its possible to grab gilly... So, next question : Is it possible to bring back gilly to kerbin orbit?

Edit : Just after seeing screenshot on mun, i think its maybe a good way if u have a base wiz plateform for landing, cause u can grab part use in plateform

I applaud you for the idea, its genius.

But just imagine how bummed you'd be if the grabbing would actually temporarily merge the "vessels" like it normally does and the camera realigns to the new center of mass ;). Good luck. I hear the Kraken giggle in the void over that thought.

I emphasise the fact that when I landed MTL, the Klaw did not grab the ground at all. The ship simply sort of bounce, bounce, falls over. And when I relaunched Gilly Grabber, it did not keep sticking to the ground like expected, it just flew upwards with Claw still acting the same. This proves that as the game is, the Klaw is not capable of sticking a ship firmly to the ground. This may change in future updates though (cough cough), so we should all keep an eye or two or three out for when that happens.

All moons and planets and the sun are locked in their orbits, you cannot move them. So no, it is not possible to bring Gilly back to Kerbin. If you did land Gilly on Kerbin, the top would not exceed the upper atmosphere.
