This is why, all those years ago, I called someone a party pooper because I really wanted to see the long drawn out attempt to visit a star that didn't exist.
You don't necessarily need comet mods as such. Some planet packs add them, though I can't recall exactly which. Also I'm pretty sure KSPRC (a visual overhaul mod) added one. I haven't played KSP seriously for a long time so I'm not 100% on the mechanics as they stand today.
However, I've got some vague memory that asteroids will mostly spawn between Kerbin and Duna but can spawn in locations the player has visited. There is however a chance I'm just mixing this up with a mod that alters the asteroid spawning.
It puts an entirely separate solar system as a binary star, way out past Eeloo. With my current tech, I can reach it in about 120 years, but it gives a reason to start using Near Future propulsion and some of the other long-time mods as a late game goal.
