I did it through practice. Probes etc. Learn by doing.

Avoided looking anything up... my own choice to play the game the way I felt it was intended. Being a sandbox type game there is no wrong way to play it though. Just how I felt about it... played as if I was really exploring.

Actually those early days of not knowing things were the most exciting and fun... then tension of not knowing if your lander will work or crash just from analysis of the readings when you send probes etc. I wish I could forget what I learned to get that feeling back again.

@GunsForBucks: Just don‘t play the game for a year or two and you will not know anything, trust me, for me it worked *perfectly*

Im sure most players after 2 years of not playing can still land on the mun within 30 minutes and on first try without needing an upgraded tracking station or advanced pilot functions.
The good thing of course is that the learning curve is near endless. If you look at the things some youtubers achieved, there is always much to learn. And once you have done all that, theres mods.

I don't think so. Played a lot of hours, not just on steam as well.. school of hard knocks tends to burn into memory .. especially when I didn't use quick save or quick load and if I lost a single kerbal I would start the game over. Granted I used generous settings to get back quick enough but doing that made me learn to check and double check and think about everything I could.

Starting over so much but always making new craft also let me improve on design each time rather than just finding one thing that works and copying it each time.

After all of that processing and thought involved I know no matter how long I may be away it would be like riding a bicycle. Muscle memory and process would kick in without me even thinking about it.

Played other games I have walked away from for years and if it was a game I was really into like this one then just playing again would make me remember.

If I looked it all up and used stock or pre made craft then yeah I could see forgetting everything. But not the way I did it.
