This will bypass steam and the launcher and let you know if the issue is with that or not.
I found out the hard way, if you have some game saves that won't load or are failing to reliably reload craft without "loosing" parts BEFORE you give up and delete and redo ...
Try doing some house cleaning within the editor, then validate within STEAM, and retry.
If you have the LOADING image in the lower right of the screen the game has made it through loading assets, it's now trying to run the main menu.
The problem is that the game uses a 3D view (just like when the game is playing) for the background of the menu and it may be having problems loading any graphics mods that you are installing.
Try <ALT> F12 and see if the debug menu shows, check for errors.
There are some mods that modify the graphics of the start menu.
Most planet packs replace the start menu with their planets graphics.
If you also have KAS/KIS installed it will try to add backpacks and stuff to the backs of the start menus Kerbals.
KAS/KIS and some other mod trying to change the start menus graphics usually ends up giving me a black screen with music.
If you wait for more then 15 minutes, it's died (*SOME* mods do take up to 15 minutes to allow access to the main menu because of crap they are doing in the background.)
Try unloading/uninstalling any graphics mods (Planet packs, clouds, planet shine & Kis/Kas) and testing a load to main menu.
If you get there then try reinstalling mods one at a time until it crashes again, to find the bad one.
Also run task manager and make sure that you are not running out of ram.
No more so than anything else on your computer.
All these mods look suspiciously like "planet packs" and unless there has been significant changes to Kopernicus and the handling of multiple star systems having all these installed alongside each other could cause serious problems if they are not designed to do so.
Edit: Additionally, go to the KSP install folder and read the KSP.log file. What was the game doing when it stopped?
