Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program

Why are my space shuttle's wings randomly dissentagrating after reentry?!
So I built a nice Space Shuttle replica in Sandbox mode that looks like the real space shuttles for the most part. I liftoff, orbit kerbin, and re enter the atmosphere. But either upon landing or during the flight back to the space center after re entry, the wings starts to randomly break apart with no premise or otherwise any actual reason. The wing connector parts and structural wing parts that I used simple break for no aparent reason and this only happens after re entry. I don't know if it's a glitch, a bug, a mechanic that I didn't know about, or my space shuttle trying to be Space Shuttle Columbia. Does anyone know what this is? Has anyone else experienced this problem with space shuttles?

The only thing I can suggest is checking the log after the wings fall off (F3) and see what it says. If it's due to overheating, you may have to consider a different approach or place something that can displace heat away from the wings. If it's due to structural failure, you may have to try reinforcing them with struts.

During re entry, the wings didn't have the heat gages on so that wouldn't be the problem. As for structural failure, the wings didn't flex at all, but the parts would like, explode, have that dust particle that have when they break as if they were hit by something. I do have them enforced with struts as well. I will though run another test with what you have suggested. Thanks!

Maybe someting at the front of the plane is coming off? or even a rogue strut going awol?

Rogue strut? Is that even a bug?
And now you see why NASA retired the shuttle program.

can you show a picture of the shuttle?

Alright, I'll try but I don't know how to put it in this thread for all of you to see.

I've experienced Spontaneous Wing Explosions too.

Solution unknown. Gotta please the Kraken.

Yeah, I just checked the log, it says that the wing collided with the lauchpad even though the Shuttle is thousands of kilometers away from the pad! It's crazy, maybe it'll be fixed, but till then, my space shuttle program is grounded. :/

I just did another test flight and this time I had the problem while in orbit. I pressed f3 and checked the log and it said that the wing collide with the launch pad despite being thousands of kilometers away. It's quite the glitch and I hope it'll get fixed. Till then, my space shuttle program is grounded. :/

Here's a link to a picture of the shuttle I built.

try putting heat shields are trying again

The wings aren't breaking from heat, the log (f3) says that the wings collided with the launchpad or some other building from the space center. It's a glitch with the game. That's what I have concluded from my prognosis.

i tried a spae shuttle, on reentry the wings exploded because of over heating
