Hm... thanks, that (mostly) worked.
The game wouldn't start with only that command but if I use:
./KSP.x86_64 -force-glcore -force-gfx-direct
it starts and the ground (so far) survives using the launchpad. There does seem to be at least one weird side effect so far: the KSC is casting shadows on the ground in weird places (and apparently from weird angles) around the base. Not quite as problematic as an invisible ground though, so I'll keep testing and see if it grows any extra limbs or anything.
If you use -force-glcore then you shouldn't need -force-gfx-direct ;)
I tried it by itself but the game won't start with only -force-glcore. It does the same black screen followed by crash as it does if I try to launch it from steam.
