Report a translation problem
Supposedly, you can play the entire game with a gamepad.
It's probably easier to keep a keyboard and mouse handy just in case.
Edit: Also, while I haven't played for a while, when I do nerd out, I use multiple controllers alongside keyboard and mouse.
Personally, i use the keyboard and mouse.
On a related note I've been recently thinking again about getting a 6 DoF "3D mouse" / "Spacemouse" (previously I was thinking about it some 7 years ago, but then I decided it's not worth it for what I'm doing). I wonder would it work with KSP and if someone is using it successfully with the game. I think it would be great for controlling both rotation and translation with just one knob.
I don't have one but the game does (or at least did) have native support for 6dof mice. It has (or had) a dedicated page in the control options menu. I'm not sure how configurable it is though.
