Docking Port Won't Connect?

I'm attempting a rendevous over Kerbin to make a space station, and already have one module connected to my hub, but my second refuses to connect. They're both the Clamp-o-tron shielded ports, both port shields are open, and controlling from one with the other set as target. Multiple times now I've approached at less than 1m/s, but as soon as the ports touch, they bounce off. I've tried docking from both ships, and they both bounce off eachother. Any help would be appreciated.

You may have the docking port 180 degrees the wrong way.

Is there any way I can tell what the proper orientation is, without trial and error? It's a bit of a pain to get them lined up from my last quicksave because my orbit is weird, and I'm low on monopropellent, so I can only try from one angle per reload.

He means you have it placed on the ship back to front. You would need to rebuild the ship with a correct docking port.

It's the shielded one, and the shields open outwards, so I don't think it's that.

1m/s is too fast to actually connect. Once your're a few meters out, slow down to 0.1 or 0.2 m/s. Turn off SAS right before you connect too, as the SAS can fight against the attraction force of the ports.

Yup, the fastest I tried was probably about 0.3m/s, hence the 'under 1m/s'.

I did get it to work though, I aligned the red lights under the shield before attempting to dock, had to spin one ship entirely around to do it.
