Kerbal Space Program

Mods Causing Computer Damage?
Hello there everyone! So, It has been a very long time since I have played this game due to some unfortunate events that have happened the last time I did. I actually broke my computer twice with certain mods I downloaded for the game, most primarily, this mod https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/111733-105-behemoth-aerospace-engineering-large-parts-v135-2015-11-15/ I'm not sure if all the particle counts could have just wrecked havoc on the computer's systems, or it was just malicious files, either way, I completely stopped playing the game out of fear that I would break my computer for the third time. It has been that way since 2015, but now I actually want to play this game again. If anyone knows if mods are dangerous, especially that mod, please let me know. Also, if you have any suggestions as to what could have caused such a thing to happen, feel free to let me know.

I can't exactly give details on what computer parts I was using at the time, since they have long been replaced and damaged, and I have forgotten them. However, I do know that I was running on windows 10, and I was getting mods from the same site as the mod above is from. So, feel free to comment below on the issue.

I wouldn't stress about it too much. As long as your other components aren't overheating you should be okay. Most likely just bad readings, besides, if it isn't messing with components you shouldn't really care. Just use one of those programs to check your temp before and after you clean out your computer. You will be amazed at the difference.

Never heard of this. Try running the stock, vanilla, normal game without any mods for a few days on and off. While you do, make sure to run a heat monitoring software in order to see what is happening. The only time I know of that a video game can cause physical damage to your machine is when too much heat is generated and it warps and shorts the many billions of nanometer-scale connections within your CPU, GPU, or RAM.

Mods can't break your computer.
Poor ventillation, too much overclocking or faulty hardware can.

Not to mention the one you linked is a parts mod, it doesn't even have a binary (.exe, .dll) file that could be malware. Besides, all mods posted on that official forum have to show their source code, which means it would be obvious if they contained malicious files.

If i had to guess i'd say the increased performance hit overheated something and that broke your pc.

Caused what? "It broke" isn't exactly useful information to be honest.

Thank you for your quick answers! At least it isn't the mods that could possibly cause this. I highly doubt it was to begin with, but it's hard to test such a thing when money is on the line. I play games like Skyrim and Oblivion, and they're both heavily modded, so it made no sense that a single mod could cause such damage. As for the overheating problem, will lowering the graphics reduce the amount of work the computer has to put into the game? Therefore, reducing performance hits? Also, my computer is 2015 era technology, and has a pretty damn huge fan, along with a video card that has fans built into it, it can sustain a pretty cool temperature, for a computer.

Lowering graphics will reduce the stress on the video card, while lowering part count (how many parts your spaceship has) will reduce stress on the cpu.
Though if you don't have any visual mods KSP will barely touch your graphics card.

I suggest installing a hardware monitoring software that shows temperatures, just to be sure.

Have you dusted your computer? Cleaned it out and made sure it's dust-free on the inside?

This.

I swear one computer I opened up that wasn't mine had a colony of dust bunnies that had just reached the stone age and were developing bronze as I cleaned them out.

All right then, I'll make sure to do that. Any suggestions on a hardware that can do that?

Oh my freaking god. XD That is absolutely terrifying, yet hilarious. But, yes, I have cleaned out my computer recently, and I got every single inch. I actually found a colony of my own settling in between the plates between the computer parts, and the disk trays...my gosh it was a sight.

I'm guessing you mean software to monitor heat? I use HWMonitor. It's free and works great. You can get it right from the source at cpuid.com .

Hmmm, all right then! I'll check it out

So, I got the program, everything looks fine, except these things called TIMPINS. TIMPIN 4 and 5 are over 200 F, which concerns me.

Play some games, then check that number. Then turn off your pc for a while to let it cool off, turn it on and check the number again.
If it doesn't change then it's just a faulty reading or a non existing sensor.
The TMPINs are usually motherboard sensors, so if the number does change then you have cooling problems.

Hmmm okay then. So I just started up my computer, and now 4 and 5 just now say [TRIAL]. Meanwhile, TMPIN 2 and 3 look good, as well as the mainboard

I think you accidently downloaded HWMonitorPRO and it is in trial mode, since you donn't have a license. You want HWMonitor

https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Or restart HWMonitorPRO until it blocks something other than temperatures

Okay, I just got it. So, the mainboard and TIMPIN 2 and 3 look fine. However, TIMPIN 4-6 look concerning, over 200 F. Is there anyway to reduce the stress put onto them?

Is it 260F? Because then it's just unconnected sensors with no real readouts: https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/61ijed/what_does_tmpin5_represent_in_hwmonitor_and_why/
