Or you search directly on the official ksp modding community (the forum or curseforge)
Or you use CKAN to make your life easier, but it is not neccessary.
as to how to get CKAN ... you google it or you look directly on the official ksp forum, or on github (it's hosted on github and is open source)
Find your gamedata folder. For most people this will be in:
Find and download the mod you want (I'll use KER for this example as MJ isn't up to date, but it will probably still work).
https://www.curseforge.com/kerbal/ksp-mods/kerbal-engineer-redux
Click the download button on the top right. Once it's downloaded, unpack it (preferably with 7zip to avoid any problems from windows built in ♥♥♥♥♥♥ archiving software).
Take everything you've unpacked, and pop it into your gamedata folder. Some mods will be packed with a gamedata folder, just open that first and copy everything from inside it to your gamedata folder (don't put a gamedata folder in your gamedata, there can be only one!)
You don't need CKAN..
Just google "KSP ckan".
It's good to know how to install mods manually, but for anything compatible with CKAN it's a superior option.
Given you didn't know how to google it to download it, you're probably someone who would very much appreciate its ease and simplicity.
CKAN will automatically download every other mod any mod depends on, and it gives you a quick and easy way to review what you have installed.
The vast majority of mods are available there and compatible with it, the number of mods that aren't there are so few that I literally can't think of one off the top of my head and I'm using around 100 mods on my installation.
it should be a single folder containing many folders such as "Parts" "Plugins" "Props" Etc.
just put it next to the Squad folder

Also, do I have to do anything else before I start KSP?
It's all in my previous comment.

Do I delete the .zip folder now? And it will automatically apply when I start KSP, right?
(You don't actually need to delete it, but it keeps things tidy).
