Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program

Transfer to Mun's SOI
Probably you know this is one of the steps in the career path.
I simply can't do it.
I've tried countless times.
I've used "tricks" shown in guides online. No joy.

Perhaps I should give up the career list and, instead, design my own Sandbox-level ships.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

If you don't want to bother with setting up a sandbox playthrough you can just alt + F12 to open the console, and cheat. Then revert flight (or load old quicksave) to undo the cheating once you figured it out.

Can do stuff like set orbits, so you don't have to bother with an ascent. Or infinite fuel cheat. Should make testing easier, speeding up trial and error.

What is your issue specifically?

Remember that everything continues to orbit as you travel.

Aim ahead of where the Mun is, where it will be; about 1/4 to 1/5 of an orbit.

Always do whatever you want to do, even in career.

Can you describe your Mun mission? Are you attempting a manual transfer without the benefit of an upgraded tracking station and mission control?
Its really not that hard, 12 o'clock and 4 o'clock.

From the map screen rotate the map so that the mun is at 12 o'clock and then you want to burn at 4 o'clock and burn until your apoapsis is a couple of millimetres from the Muns orbit.
Burn radial in/out to correct on approach to the mun, it will take a lot of dv to correct using retro/prograde. When you correct dont take your orbit to close, it doesnt need to be on your first pass, grab your science and sail on by back into orbit around Kerbin.

Never heard of the 12:00 4:00 system, but if you place your camera behind the craft and burn prograde when the Mun becomes visible over kerbins horizon line you should get there.
Straight line: Craft, edge of Kerbin, Mun.
You should get an encounter, but you might have to do a correction burn along the way to fine tune your PE and whether you're passing in front of the Mun or behind. (in front is prefered)

1) Get to a roughly circular orbit about Kerbin.
2) Set Mun as your target.
3) Burn at the ascending or descending node to bring your inclination down to 0 degrees; if your launch was good, you'll already be very close.
4) Create a maneuver node with a planned burn purely in the prograde direction to get your periapsis to roughly the same height as Mun's orbit.
5) Drag the maneuver node around your orbit until it creates an encounter with Mun.

If you can't do that, then which step do you get stuck on?

If your in career mode, you probably don't have a tracking station capable of creating maneuver nodes. Just get in to LKO, and wait an orbit until the Mun rises above kerbin. burn pro grade until your AP is at the Mun's orbit.

1. We can recreate the steps you took and point out what most likely went wrong, assuming you provide clear enough steps..

2. We can watch a video of how you really do things, assuming you can upload to youtube or someplace..

3. A picture speaks a thousand words.. assuming you know how to put pics in these forums..

4. Until then, we are guessing that our guesses will change the guessing you already attempted to use, for the purpose of guessing your way to orbit, but failed at.

5. So any advice you get from us based on minimal input from you, will be a best guess.
