The planets are constantly orbiting the sun, at different distances and angles from each other. You can't really just go from one to another whenever you choose.
When you go is more important than how you go. The difference in Dv requirement can be 10 times or more.

It seems to default to the next hohmann window even if you have the delta-v for more direct options. Its actually not trivial btw to plot some transfer types, like gravity assists.
