There is no particular reason for the lack of prop engines, beyond that they simply have never been high on the development priority list. To be honest, I'm not inclined to think props would add all to much to the stock game, just slower, less powerful, and likely less efficent jet engines with a semi-fancy animation. Useful for recreating real life aircraft, but not much else.

Sure there are propeller engines. No mods needed. You just have to build the engines! It's actually a KSP challenge of sorts to build a propeller plane using only vanilla stock parts.

I need/want them for a solar powered plane for Duna.
And i was not able to find a mod supporting 1.2 that has props.

Ah... yeah, electric props, derp, those would be nice and serve a good nitch without stepping on the toes of the existing airbreathing engines. That and intake air based RCS, like presurized air jets or something for RCS control on atmospheric VTOLs without having to carry monoprop with you everywhere, also somthing that would be quite nice to have. In any case, there is no real good reason they aren't in game beyond that Squad has always seen them as low priority compaired to other things that need to be added. Also, RoverDude has taken over FireSpitter I think, so if you google KSP FireSpitter, that should bring you to a DropBox page where you can get a 1.2 compatible re-compile.

*psst* CKAN if you want props go download that and install the available mod :) the game is made for modding! as for the why? well because it's about raw rocket power, little green men and the scathing frustration of having to do things over and over again! until you get it right and nasa eventually recruits you... (okay so not really when it comes to the nasa part)

Propeller planes have low ceilings, thrust and max speeds. Much worse than jet engines or even turbopropeller.
Real world electric cars are much heavier than the combustion ones for the same distance due to batteries.
Solar panels must be huge which means even lower speed because of prohibiting drag (which grows as speed²).
Duna's air density at zero altitude is the same it is on Kerbin at 15ooo m. Which is where you should use Vac engine already in best case scenario. It's actually hard to find place lower than 1ooom on Duna for landing and most often it's 2ooo..3ooo.
Propeller engines basically can't fly there! Record for manned propeller flight in real world is 18.5km - in case you are curious.

Just switch on infinite fuel and stop bs yourself.
