That's a perfectly normal amount of RAM for KSP to use as it loads all it's assets to RAM at launch.
Do you only have 4Gb of RAM? That's not enough to play KSP with, it hasn't been for a long time.
^^ This, i have had my KSP game go up to around 8gb of usage due to switching around to many ships, keeping background simulation on, and having the number of junk items that persist set to unlimited.
If you want to avoid large memory usage, avoid switching between ships, keep persistent parts low(Probably turn it off so all debris just is unloaded), turn texture resolution to its lowest, and revert to the main menu after each flight so the ship assets are unloaded. Otherwise you do need to upgrade your PC.
