Best version for running mods?
Hi there. I run CKAN and have LOTS of mods making KSP awesome beyond compare. But it seems like many wonderful mods stopped updating past 1.2. Also the unity changes have made some mods bugged in an unsolvable way, such as Raster Prop Monitor.

If I were to use the Steam beta function to retrograde my KSP, what version is ideal for mod availability and stability?

The best KSP version for mods would be whatever version the mod was intended for.
You would have to check out the mods you want and move your KSP version to match those mods.

It usually takes a few weeks, but the most dedicated modders usually update to the latest version. If someone leaves the KSP modding community who is maintaining an "essential mod" that the community really wants, someone else usually picks it up.

If you cross-reference your 1.2 list of mods and look for the latest versions on the forums, you can usually get updated to the latest version.

For example, most mods will work with 1.4.4 right now, although some will say in CKAN for 1.3.99 or 1.4.1 or 1.4.3 and they will still work OK.

Personally, I'm using the Betas feature in Steam to run on 1.4.3 which has basically all the mods updated. In a few weeks, I'll probably update to 1.4.4 when those other essential mods are updated.

sorry this is an old tread but i just relaunched the game after ages and am figuring out which version to use to make my old mods still work
im using ckan to see which version the mods depend on, W was going to use the beta options to install whicver version of the game seems most compatible.. but i figured id try its most recent version and most of the mods seem to be working, even though ckan threw up errors about incompatability. so idk

Keep in mind if you want to mod and have steam functions you need another mod for that ,, the launcher made modding more difficult if you want steam function.

Check this guide under bypassing the launcher. It has link to the main website where they went into detail about how to mod correctly with the launcher.

As far as this question goes today, use the latest version of the game and the latest version of any mod. CKAN alone can be unreliable as it is only using metadata that the author filled in at some point in time. A mod might still work but that file may never have been updated to reflect that. This particularly applies to part mods that basically will still work unless they were made more than about 8 years ago.

Best thing to do is just test a mod out and see if it works as expected. A good idea is to enable writing errors and exceptions to screen via the settings file so you'll know if something is up. Though it will help to understand what the errors mean because they are not always critical.
