Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program

The load won't open
So I made this really awesome world in kerbal space program that took so long. When I stopped playing I just put the computer to sleep instead of turning the game off. so eventually the game froze and just stayed like that so I had to force quit it. When I re-entered the game it said l had just started that world I was playing in. But that's not the problem because I went into the saves file and saw all the quicksaves and load saves were still there in the game, they were all still their so I should just be able to resume game and just load save once in the world but, here's the problem the load button doesn't work! And I found out the glitch where if you have a new started game it the load button does not work. So I can't open it and load a save to keep playing. Please is there a way to open it without the glitch happening Because I would like to continue playing my world.
Thanks :) BTW I'm on a MacBook Pro.

Hi there!

Even though this is an older thread, it is one of the top results when googling "KSP Saves won't load" and is a problem which still pops up now and again. That being said I'll put my solution here for visibility if that's alright :3

I have 1500+ hours in KSP and have had this happen to me 3 times now. Upon the most recent time I experimented around and found a few ways to solve this. The problem seems to stem from the game trying to load a wonky persistent save file.

For clarity this is a fix for career mode saves which says in green "Just Started!" instead of giving you your career stat readouts. When you click on the save to load your game, nothing happens. Not even a loading screen, the game just ignores you. That being said these fixes would likely work for sandboxes as well.

NOTE: Reinstalling the game will not help as the problem is in the save file for your game.

- Getting Started

All three fixes start with getting to the problem save's file location.

Open Steam -> Right Click Kerbal Space Program in the Steam Library -> Select Properties -> Select Local Files -> Select Browse Local Files -> Open the folder labeled "Save" -> Open the folder for your Career save which won't open -> Copy and paste everything here to a file somewhere else on your computer JUST IN CASE! :3

- Fix #1

From the problem save folder's location open the folder labeled "Backup" -> Copy and paste the second most recent persistent save back into the previous folder with all of the other saves -> once back in the folder with the other saves locate and delete the file named "persistent.sfs" (DO NOT DELETE "persistent.loadmeta") -> locate the backup persistent save you just copy and pasted in and delete the date in that file's name so it reads "persistent.sfs" -> Boot up the game and your save should now say your career readouts instead of saying "Just Started!" It should start no problem but with a bit of progress lost. -> You should also be able to access you manual and quicksaves to find the most recent save so you lose as little progress as possible :3

- Fix #2

From the problem save folder's location locate and delete the file named "persistent.sfs" (Do not delete "persistent.loadmeta") -> locate your most recent manual save's file ending in ".sfs" then copy and paste it in the same location -> Find the copy you just made and rename it "persistent.sfs" -> Boot up the game and your save should now say your career readouts instead of saying "Just Started!" It should start no problem but with a bit of progress lost.

- Fix #3 (The Nuclear Option)

Boot up Kerbal Space program and start a new career mode which you would like to replace your problem save -> Just after starting up your new career mode exit to the Main Menu then close the game -> Open up the problem save's folder as well as your new career save's folder -> Copy and paste all of your ships from the VAB and SPH into your new save's "Ships" folder from your problem save. -> Copy and paste a few of your most recent Manual saves from your problem career to your new one. as well as the most recent persistent saves from your backup folder (DO NOT copy and paste the "persistent.sfs" as this is most likely the problem file in the first place.) -> Boot up the game and open your new career mode -> From the Kerbal Space Center open the menu and try loading your saves you copy and pasted from the problem career -> Hopefully it should load just fine! -> Head back to the space center and Exit to Main Menu -> Your new career save should now say your old career readouts instead of saying "Just Started!". You should now be back on track with only a bit of progress lost.

Hope this helps!

Well while I recognize the sensation of panic when something like this happens (especially to a game like KSP where you put hundreds / thousands of hours into a world), the first thing you should always do is make back-ups of those savefiles right away. This is something you should do anyway when it comes to games like KSP. Make a back-up of all the save-files once a week, make this a standard habit.

After you have done that, try uninstalling / reinstalling I would say. Whatever happened to your KSP gamefiles, it should not have affected the old save files, so as long as you make back-ups of those you should be fine I think.

So your saying if I back up all the save files I can't open then reinstall the game that then I will be able to access them again. Because I didn't loose any of the saved files, I just can't access them.

Before you do anything else (alter gamefiles, uninstall, reinstall, change savefile location, savefile names, etc.) always backup savefiles. This goes for all games you play. Too many times have I read threads on different games where people panicked and started messing with files and names and such, and not making a backup before doing anything strange.

You could even try installing KSP on another pc, or a friends / family pc, and check if the savefile loads there. If it does, you know the savefile(s) are not the problem.

I can't give you a 100% guarantee since my technical knowledge is not enough to give a definite answer, but I highly doubt your game freezing made old save files corrupt as well, since these were not active at the time. At most the 'persistent' file is corrupted, but I highly doubt that as well, since it is just an autosave. From your description in OP it seems to me the game is broken now, so reinstall should hopefully fix it. (just make backups before doing anything else).

OK thanks for all you help!

OK I tried it and when I reinstalled the game it just did the same thing. Because it said I just started it The glitch occurs. So is there a way to change the quicksave in the files to one later on when I haven't just started.

Dont forget to verify game cache via steam game properties[i.imgur.com], it's easier then having to reinstall.

Good news once you have that done and the save still doesnt work you can get some back ups of your world here[i.imgur.com].
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\saves\ur save folder\Backup"

Grab those, copy them into the normal save directory with the other saves.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\saves\ur save folder"

Then you can either quick load into each one and try them out, or rename them to

So this will this make the world in ksp, change the quicksave from just started to lt saying one rocket in flight or such, without actually going into the world in game. I'll try to see if what you said fixes it though thanks

Hmm. MAC OS... forgot about that, maybe its in a different file location? If worst comes to worst. make a new world just keep back ups of your save or even your entire game on another HDD

Also there is an option which allows you reverting to previouse versions[i.imgur.com] of the game.

So make a new world and then drag all the ships and saves into that?
Also i tried opening another save and it worked but as soon as i try to open the one that I’ve spent so much time in. Just brakes the load button for everything if you try to open it.

  • Man I feel for you. *sad face*
  • Have you checked your game files? Via steam properties[i.imgur.com]?
  • At this point its obvious some files have been corrupted when you tried to put your pc mac in sleep mode.

Ok what would I do if I had the same issue? Hmm. If i came to the conclusion the world could not be saved but i still want my ship builds, Well here goes.
  1. Remove any mods clean out the save folder, by putting your mods and saves in another location (Desktop for example)
  2. Verify Integrity of Game files, not just once but twice even thrice is ok.
  3. turn on the game and play for some time as if you just baught the game. if everything seems to work and your able to load into these NEW instances of KSP then your on the road to recovery.
  4. Now feel free to delete these tests of new game and start an official game that you desire with all the settings that make you enjoy the game to its fullest.
  5. Once you have eveything the way you intended, then load into this new world and make a quick save. Name this quick same START or somthing that you know is the beginning
  6. then you can either turn off the game or alt tab to the game directory aka game files.
  7. find your ship saves and transfer them into the new world you made. Be sure to put them in the proper folder.
  8. At this point you should have a new world that WORKS :) with your old ship saves :)
  9. Feel free to take screen shots and share them. This helps the community then help you :) I recommend SHAREX via Steam store.

Ok, well I’ll lose all my space stations. I just want to know is it Possible to fix the glitch because my world is fine. If I go in it i can just load to a the latest save. The fact that it said I just started because that is the load it is in. The glitch occurs and i cant open it. So one last thing i want to know is, can you change the save from the files so when you load it up it says something other than just started because That’s What’s Occurring The Glitch! Which Means I Cant Open IT!
However if i do what you said and make a new world and drag the ships and space planes across, what would happen if I dragged one of the saves in from the other world, would that work

No this will not work since it is the save file that is broken / corrupted. but there is good news for your space stations. XD

  1. Remember to keep you new world AWAY from the old saves. That will just mess things up.
  2. build your station as if you could teleport in space.
  3. DONT build the launch vehicle part just the station it self as if its in space already :)
  4. Once your station is ready then launch it. Now your asking, well how to get it in space?
  5. If you want a semi original world that you had before. you can now teleport your stations into any orbit you want.
  6. Press ALT + F12 then hit the tab ORBIT under cheat.
  7. Pick your planet & the the orbit you want then press "orbit"
  8. Now you have a new world that works ;) with your stations already in orbit :)

Hope that works. I use it sometimes to test things like Lunar landers and stuff :)
