I can't even use my last stage to try and recover because when I go back to the space center it just freezes again and I can't do anything. The screen just freezes.

You need an actual “pilot”.
That answer was a bit vague. I.E. Q: "Did that woman jump off the cliff or did you push her off?" A: Yes
Meaning both.
In this case I had one of each, a pilot an engineer and a scientist.
At any rate I wonder if they didn't tweak the Comms System a bit. It always seemed a bit forgiving to me. Maybe check the patch notes.
