Kerbal Space Program

Is MechJeb still required?
I played Kerbal many, many, many years ago.
I always used MechJeb to get to other planets. Is this Mod still used / up to date?
Is there something better now? Or even is something like it built into the base game now?

Thanks

Yes there is something better, it is between your two shoulders and slightly elevated. In fact it’s been there in all versions of the game.

not gonna lie - you deserved that Mech.

Props for the wit Steve. I liked that one.

Sadly I am in the same boat as you and came here to see if you had got an answer. Didn't get an answer but I got a giggle.

If you want autopilot then yes, but if your just looking for information to help you orbit and land I think the last patch pretty much added all that to the new orbit windows and maneuver planner.

Only thing I would say though is that its a bit of a hassle to keep opening the orbit window, I wish it was just on screen like you can do with mechjeb custom window editor.

How does "use your own skills instead of autopilot" merit a "suck my d*ck" ?

@steven777

Tbh, I was going to offer an alternative to MechJeb, but after reading your reply to Mech, I think I'll pass.

Good luck

It's certainly not "required", but it's far and away my most essential mod and always up to date. There are no stock functions that replace the autopilot, transfer window calculator, or automated maneuver plotting.. though they did recently add a more accurate way to adjust manuevers nodes (still far inferior to Mechjeb's precise adjustment menu), stock delta-v readouts (also far inferior), and the ability to change the velocity meter to give a variety of measurements (incredibly inferior to Mechjeb's info panels).

Trying to eyeball or guess at transfer windows is just plain silly. I can certainly do it (and have many times), but ultimately it's not the way I prefer to play. If you're the type to enjoy sitting down and doing the math.. well, I guess props to you. For the rest of us, Mechjeb combines many essential functions into one mod that's reliably kept up to date and rarely breaks.

Holy throwback. What year is this? 2014?

Yeah, now the maneuver node functionality has been expanded greatly and you can get to other planets super easily with no mods at all. Doesn't really take much skill now that you can just drag lines around to plan your route, press a button to auto-align, and start your engines at the right time. This is a perfect middle-ground between automagic MechJeb and old-school no assistance at all.
