Adding docking port to a space station that's already in orbit?
It appears that my space station is missing a docking port that should be there, it not a huge issue, as there're more than enough already, but it really bugs me.

It's also on the main module that everything else is attached too, so replacing the section isn't a option.

Kerbal attachment System and an Engineer with a screwdriver? Could attach a docking port.

USI Konstruction - again needs an engineer + screwdriver (and KAS). Konstruction has weldable docking ports which are removed to mnake attachments permanent. Reduces parts count slightly.

Editing the save file - I would take a back-up before I monkeyed around with that.

In situations like this, I might allow myself to use the Alt-F12 debug menu. I build a new version of whatever it is... then put it in orbit right next to the old one, transfer crew, etc. then just delete the old one and refund myself the credits accordingly.

In my mind, I'm not really cheating in this respect... I'm just making an adjustment to a station or piece of equipment that I have deemed would be perfectly doable if the game engine did not have certain restrictive limitations. I should be able to bolt a part on a space station with an Engineer during a spacewalk.

If I want to acknowledge the part omission as a true error discovered post-launch. I might even do a mission where I carry the missing part up to the station, perform spacewalk and/or release the part in orbit and use the Alt-F12 to add the new combined parts and kill the old parts via tracking station.

For instance, we don't have an orbital construction yard either... but I might do missions to begin putting the required parts into orbit and assemble them piece-by-piece as I bring them up using this methodology.

I have also had situations where a craft or station just degrades while in orbit, for no good reason other than the game engine glitched and now my landing gear are attached in an odd fashion. ...or whatever. I allow myself to fix what the game engine messed up.

Not cheating would mean you start a new station. Opening the cheat menu and granting you something is the definition of cheating.
But its a single player game so do what ever you want.

I'd use the claw method too if I hadn't KIS installed. Flying up with a handymen crew to attach some new parts and scrap old ones is a fun addition to the game.

I explained my POV pretty clearly.

There's different levels of cheating. Blatant cheating, where you cheat whenever and however you want with no attempt to play the game, plain old cheating with stuff like "my mission's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ so ima just turn on infinite fuel", and then there's subtle cheating like this, with stuff like "show biomes" or copying over a station to save time because you made a small mistake (like missing a docking port or an antenna or whatever), which is OK as long as you have already done the work but need to account for some tiny error in design. And then there's no cheating, where you send up a new core and deorbit the old one, looking and feeling like a knob the entire time, or simply live with your mistake and decide that the station didnt need a docking port there anyway.
