Report a translation problem
The map should be centered at your craft. From above and...well, i actually dunno where the planet would usually be, not that it ever mattered. Rightclick aim, and honestly in most cases seeing the opposite face of the planet would even be nice to have. Thats where im aiming at for a deorbit anyways oO.

Flying around in first person is much more intuitive imo.
in SPH you also want to use Shift+drag with right mouse key. You can move from close zoom on plane nose to as close view on the tail, left, right, up and down, zoom... do a lot of things, just rotating the view and dragging around in the direction you need. A bit messy at times, but basically you can focus on anything anywhere because of that.
Here Shift+wheel works opposite to VAB iirc - moving up and down, while without Shift it zooms.
